Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering (BEng)
Program Description
The need to bring products to the market quickly at a competitive cost, meeting legislation on safety, the environment and product performance is one of the challenges facing todayâs engineers. To deliver products which meet these demands engineers need to understand not only how to design products that meet the customerâs requirements but also how to make these products efficiently and to the required quality standards. The demand for this type of engineer is not diminished by the trend to transfer some manufacturing of components, modules and sub-systems to countries with lower cost economies. Companies require engineers who have a sound education in both mechanical and manufacturing engineering in order for them to design and assemble the final product as well as to collaborate and coordinate effectively with the manufacturers of purchased components, wherever they are located in the world. The Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering degree explicitly develops skills in areas such as product design, automation, materials, management and finance to meet these needs. It gives the opportunity to experience individual and group project working in some of the most modern facilities, with industrial scale equipment, giving the ideal preparation for a career in engineering. You will benefit from the leading research conducted by Mechanical and Manufacturing groups. Current research includes work on appropriate technology, automotive engineering, CAD, micro- and nanotechnology, precision, mechanical and optical instruments (including medical instrumentation), rapid prototyping and robotics. Much of this research entails close collaboration with industry, leading to a profitable exchange of personnel and ideas, resulting in industrially relevant teaching and projects.
