Mathematics
Program Description
Even the philosopher Plato required his students to take lessons in mathematics. Since the 14th century, lectures on mathematics have been offered at universities. In the modern Information society, mathematics is ubiquitous. New computer chips are designed on the basis of mathematical models. Complex procedures in social services and taxation would be almost impossible without mathematicians. Companies consult mathematicians when faced with complex business decisions.
The main fields of mathematics are algebra, number theory, analysis, geometry, topology, mathematical logics, algorithms, stochastics and numerical mathematics. Studies of mathematics in Mainz comprise areas of pure and applied mathematics. Pure mathematics deals with abstract structures and relations. Applied mathematics transfers these relations to applications in natural sciences, engineering sciences, social sciences and economics. Students of mathematics can also concentrate on computer science, history of mathematics and natural sciences.
