Mechanical Engineering (BEng)

Program Description

Mechanical engineers create almost all the technological devices that enable our modern way of life, from automobiles to machine tools, household appliances to the robots that make computer chips, from power stations to cooling systems for electronics. Few modern devices are purely mechanical and so mechanical engineers tend to work in teams with specialists in other areas such as electronics or computing, teams they are well placed to lead. To exploit new and emerging technologies the mechanical engineer must have at least a basic understanding of engineering design: the mechanics of machines and structures: thermodynamics: and fluid dynamics. This needs to be supplemented by a firm grounding in computational methods, mathematics, materials science and the electronics of instrumentation and control (sometimes called mechatronics). Our research provides very important support for our teaching and the course is influenced directly by it. Current research at Warwick includes work on appropriate technology, CAD, computational and experimental fluid dynamics, micro- and nanotechnology, precision, mechanical and optical instruments (including medical instrumentation), and thermodynamics.
