Musik teacher Jazz and Popularmusic

Program Description

Unlike musicology, which predominantly deals with theoretical and historical aspects of music, studies in the Department of Music prepare students for professional work as musicians and music teachers. The coursework is based on fundamentals of the arts, arts education, and academic aspects.

Students choose either a musical instrument or singing as their major field of study and also acquire the ability to express and create music independently. The studies not only include musical techniques but also means of artistic performance and structural principles. Professors, artistic assistants, and assistant professors give individual or group lessons on playing musical instruments and singing. In addition to these artistic subjects, students also take courses on music theory and practice, such as ear training, composition, study of instruments, music history, conducting, and improvisation. All courses of study include choir, ensemble, and orchestra work. The Department of Music offers a symphony orchestra, a symphonic brass ensemble, a classical choir, as well as a jazz, rock, and pop choir, and a big band.

The courses of study which lead towards an arts education career path are: Diplom-Musiklehrer/in - Klassik oder Jazz/Popularmusik (graduate music teacher - classical music or jazz and popular music) and Diplom-Musiklehrer - Gesang (graduate music teacher - singing), and Bachelor of Musical Arts (compulsory module elementary music education). Musical educators help to acquire the skills and knowledge for creative interaction with music, as well as analysing and interpreting musical masterpieces.

The courses of study which lead towards an artistic career path are: Diplom-Orchestermusik (graduate orchestra musician), Diplom-Gesang (graduate singer), Diplom-Jazz/Popularmusik, Diplom-Kirchenmusik - B-Prüfung (graduate church musician - B-exam), Bachelor of Musical Arts (compulsory module jazz/popular music), as well as the postgraduate courses of study Diplom-Kirchenmusik - A-Prüfung (graduate church musician - A-exam), Liedbegleitung / Korrepetition (accompaniment), and the Konzertexamen (concert exam). Great musical talent is necessary to succeed in these studies. This will be tested in a special selection process.
