Philosophy with Computer Science
Program Description
This degree is designed to enable students with a good mathematical background to undertake a Philosophy degree enriched with some of the more exciting modern developments along its frontiers. Many of the ideas of the theory of computability were originally created by logicians. Computer scientists, especially those working within the field of artificial intelligence, are increasingly coming to appreciate the importance for their work of the theory of knowledge, the philosophy of mind, and other areas traditionally reserved for philosophers. The degree is not a joint degree, but a variant of the single honours degree in Philosophy.
Students spend about three quarters of their time studying logic, philosophy of science, the theory of knowledge, and the history of philosophy; in the other one quarter, they are introduced to some of the central ideas in computer science, the emphasis being on software and design, rather than hardware (for more details see the description of the single honours degree in Computer Science. A good A level pass in Mathematics is required for entry to the degree; programming experience is desirable, but formal programming qualifications are not required.
