Systems Engineering (MEng)

Program Description

Systems Engineering is a modern degree course that has been introduced to meet the growing needs for engineers who can take a holistic view of the products and businesses around them. A growing number of companies, such as BAE Systems, refer to themselves as systems integrators. These companies specialise in combining modules and subsystems from many different sources, designed and made both within their own company and by others located across the world. The value these companies add lies within the design, delivery and servicing of complex systems such as aircraft, electricity generation, road and rail transportation. We are only too aware of the problems created by recent system failures in electricity distribution and railway maintenance. Within the companies responsible for recent failures there are excellent specialist engineers but what appears to be missing are engineers who can analyse and design an effective system. Even within more traditional manufacturing or service companies there is a need for people who can take a holistic view of complex problems and proposed technological solutions.

Our large unified School of Engineering places us in an ideal situation to deliver a truly interdisciplinary degree including electronics, mechanical and manufacturing systems as well as an appreciation of business systems within engineering.
