Our aim is to share our passion for research through an education that is firmly anchored in initiative and open-mindedness. The Ecole normale superieure de Lyon is a place of reactivity and innovation in teaching and research where researchers, teaching faculty and students work side by side daily. Our academic programs, designed in cooperation with the Universite Claude Bernard Lyon 1 and other higher education institutions of the Rhone-Alpes region, are in close interaction with the research conducted in the thirteen internationally renowned laboratories located at the school.
The ENS Lyon, like other French "Grandes Ecoles", occupies a special niche in France's higher education system. After beginning their higher education elsewhere, students who successfully complete the rigorous selection process enter the ENS Lyon in the last year of their undergraduate studies. In actuality, the first year of studies at the ENS Lyon is considered more as a "pre-master" than as the end of undergraduate studies. Even though they do acquire their undergraduate degree at the end of their first year at the school, students don't come to the ENS Lyon to finish an undergraduate degree. They come to do their graduate studies in a high-level research oriented program.
Our students, after thorough preparation, become privileged actors in teaching and research in public or semi-public organizations and in the private sector. Research innovation and daring, strong specialized knowledge and openness towards other disciplines for teaching are the ideals which accompany the commitment of those who study and work at the École normale superieure de Lyon. The motivation behind this interdisciplinary scientific education is the construction of tomorrow's world.

Entry Requirements
Avg Entry Requirements 4
Please express the average academic achievement entry requirements for your institution. Please convert your domestic requirements to the US Grade Point Average system. The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data. Finance and Scholarships

French and European students who are admitted to the ENS Lyon through the competitive entrance exam (normaliens) become civil servants in training, therefore they receive a salary for four years (1300 euros/month); however, these students are obliged to work for the civil service at the end of the four year period.
Students admitted based on their academic dossier (auditeurs) are entitled to the same types of financial aid as others studying in the French university system.

Entry Requirements

Students are admitted to the ENS Lyon in a number of different manners. Admission procedures and requirements vary depending on the student's goals, academic history and achievement.

1) Competitive examinations
The first entrance examination applies mainly to candidates who have undergone an intensive two-year preparation period in France (classes préparatoires). This examination accounts for 90% of the élèves normaliens admitted, i.e. about 100 students from a total of over 3,000 candidates. The examination consists of four disciplines: physics and chemistry, life and earth sciences, mathematics, and computer science. Successful students are admitted as L3 (final year of undergraduate studies) students.
The second entrance examination is reserved for the best second year students from French or foreign universities. Candidates may sit for this examination only once and choose two from among the following six disciplines: biology-biochemistry, chemistry, Earth science, computer science, mathematics and physics. Successful students are admitted as L3 students.

2) Selection upon application
French and foreign students may be admitted on the basis of their application and academic background and granted the status of auditeur, which although it does not allow them to become civil servants in training or receive a salary or scholarship, it does allow them to earn credits towards a degree. Approximately 200 students are selected as auditeurs, including about forty foreign students every year. Successful students are admitted as L3 students.

All students must have an equivalent of 120 ECTS to enter the undergraduate programs.

Language Support

English classes are required during the final year of undergraduate studies (L3). Students are put in groups according to their level. They may also take the CLES 2 exam at the end of the academic year. This certificate attests to language competency at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Non-English Language Requirements

Although no specific requirement is set, the normal teaching language is French so students need to have a level in French that is sufficient to understand the courses. Intensive French courses are offered for all international students.
