Freie Universitaet Berlin is one of the leading universities in Germany and distinguishes itself through its modern and international character. In university rankings Freie Universitaet places among the best universities. According to the internationally relevant ranking of The Times Higher Education Supplement, the humanities at Freie Universitaet are the best in Germany. The Funding Rankings of the German Research Foundation DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemein- schaft) place the humanities at Freie Universitaet in first place and the natural sciences in fourth place.

Freie Universitaet is also one of the largest universities in Germany, offering degree courses in about 100 subjects for 34,000 students – of whom 15 per cent come from other countries. For many foreign scholars, such as fellows of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Freie Universität is the university of preference for their stay in Germany.

Without including Medicine, Freie Universität is currently lead university for seven collaborative research centers of the German Research Foundation DFG and also has four DFG research units. In addition, because of the wide variety of subjects it offers, Freie Universität has three collaborative research centers in the humanities and social sciences. Fourteen scholars of Freie Universität have to date been awarded a Leibniz Prize of the DFG, the most important German prize for research achievements. With the amount of 60 million euros of external funding acquired each year, Freie Universität canvasses a significant proportion of its income from third-party funds.
Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 2,236 FTE: 1,764
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.

Entry Requirements
Avg Entry Requirements 4
Please express the average academic achievement entry requirements for your institution. Please convert your domestic requirements to the US Grade Point Average system. The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data. You can use World Education Services (WES) Toolkit as guidline: http://www.wes.org/gradeconversionguide/index.asp (copy and paste)

International Partnerships
Freie Universität maintains wide-ranging international contacts to other universities and organizations which provide key impulses for research and teaching: In the 1950s, Freie Universität had already established partnerships with leading universities in the United States such as Stanford, Princeton, and Columbia, as well as with Western European universities. First contacts with universities in Eastern Europe were made in the 1970s. In particular in the 1990s, links were extended to include growing numbers of institutions in North America, Eastern Europe, and the Far East.

Academic Exchange
Today, Freie Universität has 130 partnerships worldwide, and every year some 600 visiting scientists contribute to the university’s teaching and research. For the grant programs in Germany, Freie Universität is one of the first choices both for the Erasmus, Tempus, and Socrates programs, as well as for the Fulbright program and the international programs of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). An International Summer University has been set up for foreign students offering internationally accepted credits.

Honorary Doctorates
Outstanding personalities who have recently been awarded honorary doctorates by Freie Universität Berlin include the Nobel laureate in literature, Orhan Pamuk, the literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki, the former General Secretary of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, the physicist Lise Meitner, and the politician Eleanor Dulles, known as the “Mother of Berlin,” who was the sister of the American Secretary of State John Foster Dulles.
