München or the University of Munich, was founded in 1472 and is one of the oldest
universities in Germany.
With approximately 48,000 registered students at summer semester 2005 8000 of whom
are foreign students, it is one of the largest universities in Germany. There are 19 faculties
(Fakultaten), organized into 178 academic institutes and clinics. Approximately 51% of the
students are registered in the various arts faculties. Just over half of all the matriculated
students are women. About 800 full-time professors and 5,800 other academics teach and
do research at the LMU.
The University Library (Universitatsbibliothek München / UBM) and the affiliated libraries of
the individual institutes have holdings of more than two million books and volumes of
periodicals to support teaching and research.
Although the main university campus is located near the city center, there are institutes at
almost 100 different addresses, most of them within the city boundaries. Since the mid-
1970′s large new complexes for the Faculties of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Physics
have been erected on the outskirts of the city in Grosshadern, and to the north of Munich in
Oberschleissheim and Garching respectively.
Of all German universities, the LMU offers the widest range of subjects and subject
combinations. At present students can take 96 different subjects leading to the degrees
Magister Artium (M.A.), Diploma, or a State Examination. After completion of one of these
degrees, it is possible to pursue certain post-graduate courses of study or to study for a
Doctorate. Admission to some courses of study ("numerus clausus" courses) is restricted.

Main claims to international academic or non-academic excellence
With degree programs available in 150 subjects in numerous combinations, the array of courses we have to offer is extremely wide. Some 47,000 students, 16 percent of whom come to us from abroad, are currently taking advantage of these opportunities. They view their studies as an investment in the future, a launching pad for their later careers. We put our faith in imagination, open minds and creative intelligence.
LMU Munich takes the education of young people very seriously. When we speak of academic diversity, we also mean a comprehensive education that encompasses social skills alongside a critical awareness of values and history. This includes the Munich legacy of the Weisse Rose, the student-based resistance group that opposed Nazism.
Range of Fees
Tuition fees were introduced in the summer term 2007. The amount equals 300 Euro per semester for all but PhD students. The fee will be raised on an amount of 500 Euro in the winter term 2007/08.
