National Tsing Hua University has a long and proud history. First established as the Tsing Hua Academy at Tsing Hua Garden, Beijing in 1911, the Academy was renamed as National Tsing Hua University in 1928 as its curricula expanded to that of a full-fledged university. In 1956, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) was reinstalled on its current campus in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
Since its reinstallation, NTHU has developed from an institute focusing on Nuclear Science and Technology to that of a comprehensive research university offering degrees programs ranging from baccalaureate to doctorate in science, engineering, life science, humanities and social sciences, as well as management. NTHU has been consistently ranked as one of the premier universities in Taiwan and is widely recognized as the best incubator for future leaders in industries as well as academics. Such stellar records are particularly exemplified by the outstanding achievements of our alumni, including two Nobel laureates in physics, Dr. Cheng-Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee, one Nobel laureate in chemistry, Dr. Yuan-Tseh Lee and one Wolf Prize winner in mathematics Dr. Shiing-Shen Chern.
There are seven colleges in Tsing Hua: College of Science, Engineering, Nuclear Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, as well as Technology Management. There is, moreover, a Commission of General Education to coordinate the basic educational programs for the entire university, and a residential college (Tsing Hua College) where special programs are offered to selected undergraduate students.
In addition to discipline-specific programs, NTHU's undergraduate curricula are designed to maximize flexibility in order to accommodate diverse interests and facilitate interdisciplinary training. To foster excellent teaching and research, the University is actively recruiting outstanding scholars to expand and upgrade its instructional and research programs. In addition, the University Library, the Computer and Communication Center, and laboratory facilities are all continuously being upgraded to improve the learning environment and maximize research potential. Such continuous effort to improve research and teaching has made the University the top choice for students and its graduates the top choice in all industrial, business as well as academic sectors.
In research, NTHU's strategy is to emphasis basic scientific research as well as its applications. Long term projects are facilitated by an interdisciplinary cooperative effort that typically involves faculty members and graduate students across departmental and collegiate boundaries. Research results are published in world leading journals. Take the Science Citation Index as an example, the number of papers published by our faculty stands at the forefront of all universities in Taiwan.
The University makes great efforts to provide and maintain a first rate research infrastructure. Laboratory
facilities, library resources, and computing and communication services are continuously being
upgraded. In addition, we are also aware of the fact that important research projects frequently require team efforts. Thus, we established 17 topical Research Centers to promote and facilitate interdisciplinary
endeavors. There are Nuclear Science and Technology Development Center; Nanotechnology, Material Science and Microsysytems Center; Higher Education Research Center; National Center for Theoretical Sciences; IC Design and Development Center; Science. Technology and Society Center; Computer and Communication Research Center; Photonics Research Center; ITRI/NTHU Joint Research Center; Contemporary China Research Center; Energy and Environmental Research Center; Precious Instrument Center; Brain Research Center Scientific Instrument Center; Biomedical Science and Engineering Center; Basic Science Research Center, and Humanities and Social Sciences Research Center.
