Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national university with a high reputation in and outside China, owing to the abundant teaching resources and outstanding research level. Peking University now consists of 31 colleges and 14 departments, offering 101 undergraduate programs, 224 postgraduate programs, and 202 doctoral programs.
In 2004, there were over 4000 international students from about 80 countries, including 1825 long-term students and approximately 2,600 short-term students. Among them, there were 1,292 Degree-Seeking students, including those seeking undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree.
Peking University is making great efforts to create more opportunities for international students from all over the world.
There is a difference in tuition fees between humanistic subjects (26,000 RMB per year) and scientific subjects (30,000 per year).
No specific English language certificate is needed. But English and Chinese will be tested in the entry exams.
The Shao Yuan Accommodation Office is in charge of the housing on campus for foreign students. Students may also live off-campus, but they must register with the local residence office.
These are the different kinds of accomodation provided by the Shao Yuan Accomodation Office on-campus. A standard dorm room costs US $3.50 per person per day. Two students will share a room, communal bathrooms and showers can be found on each floor. The PKU scholarship will only cover the US $3.50 housing, and students will be responsible for the extra cost of alternative housing.
Other types of accommodations are as follows:
⢠Building 6: each person has a private room with carpeting, a small sitting room shared by three persons, a color TV set, internet access, a telephone, and a private bathroom/shower. US $8 per person per day.
⢠Building 8: each person has a private room with carpeting, a small sitting room shared by two persons, a color TV set, internet access, a telephone, and a private bathroom/shower. US $11 per room per day.
⢠Building 9: standard single room with color TV set, a telephone, internet access, a refrigerator, and air conditioning. US $20 per room per day.
⢠Building 5: standard double room with carpeting, a color TV set, a telephone, internet access, a refrigerator, air conditioning, and a study room. US $28 per room per day.
⢠Building 8: standard with internet access. US $38 per room per day.
Only third-year undergraduates, masters, or doctoral exchange students are eligible for a Peking University scholarship. They all must proove a brilliant study career.
The scholarships amounts are as follows:
â Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship: 3,000 RMB 30 students
â Masters Academic Excellence Scholarship: 4,000 RMB 15 students
â Doctorate Academic Excellence Scholarship: 1st Prize: 10,000 RMB 5 students; 2nd Prize: 5,000 RMB 10 students.
Foreign students can also apply for a scholarship directly to the China Scholarship Council, which provides scholarships for undergraduate, graduate, and advance students', as well as funding for special research or training.
All International Students should contanct the OIR (Office of International Studies). Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, above the age of 18 and under the age of 30, in possession of a high school diploma. Entrance examination tests will be taken every year in April.
