The Politecnico di Milano was established in 1863 by a group of scholars and entrepreneurs belonging to prominent Milanese families. Its most eminent professors over the years have included the mathematician Francesco Brioschi (its first Director), Luigi Cremona, and Giulio Natta (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963). The Politecnico di Milano is now ranked as one of the most outstanding European universities in Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design, and in many disciplines is regarded as a leading research institution worldwide
In Italy the term "Politecnico" means a state university consisting only of study programmes in Engineering and Architecture. The Politecnico di Milano is nowadays organised in 16 departments and a network of 9 Schools of Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design spread over 7 campuses over the Lombardy region with a central administration and management. The 9 schools are devoted to education whereas the 16 departments are devoted to research.
The educational policy of the Politecnico di Milano consists in offering different curricula tailored to the needs of its territory, which is considered one of most developed industrial areas in Europe.
The number of students enrolled in all campuses is approximately 30,000, which makes the Politecnico di Milano the largest institution in Italy for Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design.

ALTA SCUOLA POLITECNICA
The Alta Scuola Politecnica (ASP) is a joint institution of Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino, addressed to those young talents who want to develop their interdisciplinary capabilities for leading and promoting innovation. The ASP aims to be an answer to the growing demand of Public Administrations and enterprises for young talents capable to face complex and multifaceted problems. Therefore, the ASP has strict connections with Public Administrations and the enterprises in Lombardy and Piedmont, considered as one of the most developed macro-regions in Europe.
The ASP runs in parallel to the two-year courses of laurea magistrale and adds 30 credits (15 gained from courses and 15 from a multidisciplinary project work) to the 120 acquired during the regular study courses. The ASP has an interdisciplinary approach: there will be one single class, composed by students coming from Engineering, Architecture and Design.
ASP selects each year 150 promising students enrolled in the first year of a laurea magistrale course in Engineering, Architecture and Design either at the Politecnico di Milano or at Politecnico di Torino.
See ASP website: www.asp-poli.it
Alta Scuola Politecnica (ASP)
Fee-waivers are offered to all ASP students. The fee waiver concerns both the tuition fees of the laurea magistrale of Politecnico di Milano (up to roughly 3.000,00 € per year) and the tuition fees of ASP (€ 3.000,00 per year).
In addition, foreign students receive support for their accommodation, in the form of admission free of charge to a student residence or, in case places are not available, in the form of a grant. All ASP students are also provided with a budget for their multidisciplinary projects, whose allocation is defined by the team and agreed upon with tutors. ASP students will be able to take full advantage of all the services and structures such as libraries, laboratories, sport facilities, at both Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino.

SINO-ITALIAN CAMPUS
Following a ceremony held in Shanghai on 16 September, 2006, the first Italo-Chinese University, which will enable both Chinese and Italian students to obtain a degree recognized in both countries, was inaugurated. The Politecnico di Milano and the Politecnico di Torino, for the Italian part, in collaboration with the Tongji University of Shanghai, for the Chinese part, have instituted two joint first level Degree courses (B.Sc.), respectively in Mechanical Production Engineering - MPE, and in Information Technology Engineering - ITE.
The initiative, implemented also thanks to financial backing by MIUR, is among those envisaged for 2006, proclaimed the Year of Italy in China, and constitutes the most significant event in the field of higher education.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES
The Politecnico di Milano offers university students worldwide the opportunity to participate in high-quality international projects, based on several programmes and on mutual agreements with about 500 partner universities all over the world.
Students selected for a specific programme with our Institution, can enrich their academic careers spending a period at the Politecnico di Milano and earning ECTS credits to transfer back to their home institution.

DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAMMES
With the aim of offering its students a scientific, technical and cultural experience of high level and the opportunity to live a first-hand company experience in a country other than the country of origin, the Politecnico di Milano promotes bilateral agreements in order to set up double degree programs.
In case of double degrees, both the degree of Politecnico di Milano and the one of the partner Institution have a legal value in the country where they are obtained (this is true for both the old and the new educational systems).
Students coming from one of the partner institutions, with which the bilateral agreement has been stipulated, are allowed to substitute one year at their home institution with two years at the Politecnico di Milano.
All incoming students, who will come within the frame of these agreements, will be enrolled in a study courses at the level of "Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale" at the Politecnico di Milano.
Students are required to spend two years at Politecnico di Milano and to face a workload of 120 ECTS.
In order to be awarded the degree of Politecnico di Milano and the one by the home Institution, students have to fulfil all the requirements established in the bilateral agreements and explicitly made known to the students by the relevant study course regulations: the departmental coordinator of each study course has the role of tutor and he/she advices and helps double degree incoming students during their academic activities at the Politecnico di Milano.
Students will also have to develop a final project under the supervision of one of the Professors of Politecnico di Milano and they will discuss it in front of a Committee.

T.I.M.E.
The Top Industrial Managers for Europe (T.I.M.E.) Programme was started in 1988 by some of the most important European Schools of Engineering and it became an Association in 1997. Politecnico di Milano is a founding member of the TIME Association, which nowadays counts 46 members among the leading European Technical Institutions. The Rector of Politecnico di Milano was the President of the Association from 2001 to 2005.
The purpose of T.I.M.E. is to train future managers by offering them a scientific, technical and cultural experience of high level in two European countries and the opportunity to live a first-hand company experience in a country other than the country of origin.
The Association promotes bilateral agreements between its member Institutions in order to set up double degree programmes. At present, Politecnico di Milano offers students the opportunity of obtaining a double degree in cooperation with 26 partner Institutions.
Both the degree of Politecnico di Milano and the one of the partner Institution have a legal value in the country where they are obtained (this is true for both the old and the new educational systems).
Within the T.I.M.E. Programme, Engineering students coming from one of the partner institutions, with which the bilateral agreement has been stipulated, are allowed to substitute one year at their home institution with two years at the Politecnico di Milano.
All incoming students, who will come within the frame of the T.I.M.E. programme, will be enrolled in Engineering study courses at the level of "Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale" at the Politecnico di Milano.
Students are required to spend two years at Politecnico di Milano and to face a workload of 120 ECTS.
In order to be awarded the degree of Politecnico di Milano and the one by the home Institution, students have to fulfil all the requirements established in the bilateral agreements and explicitly made known to the students by the relevant study course regulations: the departmental coordinator of each Engineering study course has the role of tutor and he/she advices and helps T.I.M.E. students during their academic activities at the Politecnico di Milano.
Students will also have to develop a final project under the supervision of one of the Professors of Politecnico di Milano and they will discuss it in front of a Committee.

Accommodation

Traditionally, Italian universities are organized differently from most international institutions. This means that Italian campuses consist of academic and administrative buildings as well as departments and laboratories. Students' residences are not part of the campus. All campuses of the Politecnico di Milano are organized according to this model.
However, especially in the latest years, the Politecnico di Milano has been working on the “accommodation policy” aimed to offer an accommodation to the highest number of students, always trying to involve them in the academic context and in the Milanese environment. Taking this challenge has meant to plan various activities for strengthening and diversifying the accommodation services.
Important steps towards the creation of an accommodation system have been made by reinforcing the University facilities system. In fact the Politecnico di Milano during the last three academic years has almost doubled its offer.
Nonetheless, the Politecnico di Milano cannot guarantee all students a place in residences and in fact some students choose to live in privately rented housing.
To this extent, you can contact WebCasa. It is a service offered by University Lab, a Politecnico students associations. They collect privates announcements for rooms/flats and help students accessing this kind of information.
