Universidad ORT Uruguay is fully recognized as a privately managed university under the Uruguayan legal framework . It has four schools (Engineering, Management and Social Sciences, Communications and Design and Architecture) and one institute (Education). Enrolment in university-level programs is about 3,500 undergraduate students, evenly distributed among the schools, and about 300 graduate students in Master and Diploma programs. It also has about 1700 students in technical, vocational, executive and short courses. ORT Uruguay University is probably the largest private higher education institution in Uruguay.
The university pursues activities of academic cooperation with other universities around the world. These activities typically include exchanging professors to teach seminars or courses, collaboration in international networks and joint research projects. Often, these activites are supported on specific academic agreements. The university has managed cooperation projects financed by the European Commission and the Interamerican Development Bank, among other international organizations.
The university has a strong innovation, technology and management profile. It was the first higher education institution in Uruguay to offer distance courses and certificates through the Internet, and it is a co-founder (together with the National Technology Laboratory, LATU) of the first technology-based business incubator, Ingenio.
An International Students Office in the university supports students coming in exchanges or in free mobility. There is a one-semester Advanced Spanish course designed for incoming students.
