Universidad ORT Uruguay is a privately managed, non-confessional university, fully recognized under the Uruguayan legal framework. It was founded in 1942 as a non-profit educational institution, originated in the Uruguayan Jewish community; currently, it is probably the largest private higher education institution in Uruguay.
Historically committed to offering quality education guided by the principle of equal opportunity, the university sponsors a scholarship programme, which benefits more than 1.500 students per year. This allows for an inclusive and heterogeneous composition of the student body where young people from different social backgrounds interact and study together.
The university has four schools (Engineering, Management and Social Sciences, Communications and Design and Architecture) and one institute (Education). Undergraduate study programmes are offered in the fields of Engineering (Electronics, Software and Telecommunications), Architecture, Management, International Studies, Accounting, Economics, Journalism, Advertising, Audiovisual Production, and Design (Graphic, Industrial and Fashion). Current information about undergraduate programmes may be obtained from the web page http://www.ort.edu.uy.
Activities of academic cooperation with other universities around the world are highly valued. These activities typically include exchanging professors to teach seminars or courses, collaboration in international networks and joint research projects. Often, these activites are supported by specific academic agreements. The university has managed cooperation projects financed by the European Commission and the Interamerican Development Bank, among other international organizations.
The university has a strong innovation, technology and management profile. It was the first higher education institution in Uruguay to offer distance courses and certificates through the Internet, and it is a co-founder (together with the National Technology Laboratory, LATU) of the Uruguayan first technology-based business incubator, Ingenio (in 2001).
An International Students Office in the university supports students coming in exchanges or in free mobility. There is a one-semester Advanced Spanish course designed for incoming students.
The university carries out applied research, in close contact with business enterprises and research centres. Postgraduate degrees are offered in the fields of Engineering, Management and Education.
