This semester over 20.500 students attend the university (more under University -> History), which was founded in 1558, in the “Green Heart” of Germany. Thuringia’s largest university values interdisciplinary work and internationalism and puts these goals into action, as seen in the new website. The reformatting of the site has recently begun, and should continually grow. Regular visits to www.uni-jena.de will therefore pay off in the future.

The largest university with the only university medical center in Thuringia has connections around the world, which can be seen in the “International” section of this site. The university cooperates with over 240 universities and research institutions, and it works with over 200 partners around the world, from small and middle sizes business as well as global players, in research projects. Its roots remain in the region, in which numerous clusters developed from the “Alma mater Jenensis”. These clusters refer to the humanities and social sciences as well as the medical and natural sciences.

Jena is once again considered as a high-tech-boomtown and is one of the most beautiful university cities of the reunited Germany. A new campus with top modern lecture halls was built in the heart of the city on the site of the former Zeiss main factory. The new university library offers a innovative concept in one of the most attractive library buildings of the republic, and the new building plans of the “Klinikum 2000” are now underway.

Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 2,135 FTE: 1,765
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting professors who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as ‘research only’ should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.
