Nowadays over 27,000 students attend the University of Amsterdam. From Trade and Philosophy the original Athenaeum Illustre has expanded into a comprehensive university featuring almost sixty disciplinary fields - with the exception of the field of technology.
The University of Amsterdam is one of the major comprehensive universities in Europe with 27,000 students and a budget of 487 million euros. It has a strong internationalization programme and offers a number of Dutch and English language courses. There are seven faculties covering humanities, social and behavioural sciences, law, economics and business, medicine, dentistry and science.
The UvA thus offers a comprehensive range of academic study programmes. UvA staff publish around 7,500 scholarly articles each year. The university's fundamental academic research is top of the international league in many respects. The applied research programmes are often of an interdisciplinary nature and often focus on social issues.
The UvA aims to offer an inspiring, broadly oriented international academic environment where both staff members and students can develop their capacities to optimum effect. The UvA is characterised by a critical, creative and international atmosphere, open-minded and strongly engaged with society. Because the UvA is located in both historic and modern buildings spread throughout the city, the university forms an integral part of the city of Amsterdam.
Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff FTE: 3,232
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting professors who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as ‘research only’ should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.

Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term ‘international’ is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. HSP Huygens Programme. 32 available @ EUR 0

The prestigious HSP Huygens programme is open to excellent students from all countries of the world. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies. PhD applications can only be accepted from excellent students from Croatia and Turkey.

The Dutch Ministry for Education, Culture and Science has made seven million euros per year available for international excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the HSP Huygens programme. There is no fixed number of available scholarships, but the actual number is determined by the total cost of the variable components of the scholarships.

The Dutch Ministry has reserved part of the total budget for excellent students following programmes in Dutch language and literature (Neerlandistiek). The candidates of Neerlandistiek must meet the same criteria as all other candidates.

Application Process
When applying for the scholarship you will need a HSP nomination letter from the University of Amsterdam. The first step you need to take is to apply for the study programme of your choice via the programme manager and ask the programme manager for a HSP nomination letter. The nomination letter will only be offered to excellent students.

Being accepted in the programme does not mean that you will automatically receive a nomination letter. The programme manager and/or the academic supervisor decides which candidate(s) will receive a letter.

The programme manager sends the nomination letter to the HSP-coordinator, who will then transfer it to the candidate by e-mail. The candidate can only complete his of her file with this letter and send all documents to the HSP office at the NUFFIC in The Hague.

See the NUFFIC website (http://www.nuffic.nl/international-students/scholarships/worldwide/hsp-huygens-programme) for more information on the scholarships and the application procedure.
