In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, Bristol achieved the top rating of 5 or 5* in 78% of its departments, demonstrating the environment of international-class research.The University is located in the centre of the City of Bristol, less than a mile from the original medieval waterfront. Within easy walking distance, the city centre has shopping precincts, international restaurants and food stores, as well as theatres cinemas, museums, concert halls and other entertainment centres. Life in Bristol is relaxed, with a vibrant youth culture in which the University students participate enthusiastically to complement their studies.The University is one of the most competitive in the UK for domestic students. International students holding appropriate qualifications do not, however, have to compete for places in most departments, and applications from suitably qualified candidates are welcomed.Accommodation in single study bedrooms is guaranteed for all international students who accept before the deadline in mid-July. Bristol has very popular and convenient Postgraduate residences, where social life and study happen alongside each other.Bristol has its own international airport, with links to continental Europe in Amsterdam and Paris. Many international students choose to take long-haul flights to these cities with an onward connection to Bristol, avoiding the queues at the London airports. The taxi ride from the airport costs around £15. Transport from the London airports is easy, with a choice of bus or train, costing around £30. The city is 90 minutes by rail from London.
