The University of Coimbra was founded by King Dinis and confirmed by Papal Bull of Nicholas IV on the 9th August 1290. It is an institution dedicated to creation, transmission, critique and dissemination of culture, science and technology which through study, teaching, and research, is specifically aimed at:

1.Human, cultural, scientific and technical instruction
2.The Carrying out the basic, applied research
3.The conservation and enhancement of its scientific, cultural, artistic and natural heritage
4.Cooperation with the community, to their mutual benefits
5.Cultural, scientific and technical exchange with kindred institutions at home and abroad
6.The contribution within the scope of its activity, towards international cooperation and the formation of closer ties among people, with special reference to Portuguese speaking countries and the nations of Europe
