Undergraduate Profile

University College Cork (UCC) was originally established in 1845 as one of three Queen's Colleges in Cork, Galway and Belfast. In 1908 it became a constituent College of the National University of Ireland and a constituent University of the National University under legislation enacted in 1997.

Today University College Cork is a major research-intensive university delivering world-class research in academic departments and in research centres of national and international significance. The university boasts almost 12,000 undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor Degree programmes and over 3,000 postgraduate students pursuing higher degrees. The student population includes some 3,000 international students. The university is committed to lifelong learning and there are also over 2,200 part-time students pursuing Adult Continuing Education courses on campus and in centres throughout the Munster region.

UCC is the university of first choice for growing numbers of students from Ireland and overseas. The university offers honours bachelor degree programmes across the Humanities, Business, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Science, Food Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and the Clinical Therapies.

The university has a beautiful and cosmopolitan campus with the gothic revival style main quadrangle building, modelled on a typical Oxford College, at its centre. The campus is within easy walking distance of Cork city centre where cafes, restaurants and night life combine to create a vibrant European city atmosphere. Cork was European City of Culture in 2005.

UCC offers a superb student experience characterized by the quality and range of its academic programmes, excellence in teaching and learning, responsive student support services and outstanding opportunities for personal development through its many clubs and societies. At UCC there is a strong emphasis on the visual arts, theatre and music. Centrepiece stands the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, not only a building of national architecture and artistic significance, but a resource for hosting an inspiring variety of collections, exhibitions, lectures and workshops.

Reflecting the university's global vision a Centre for Chinese Studies has been established. This new Centre offers courses in Chinese language, history, culture and in business. The development reflects UCC's wish to produce an Irish generation who can effectively deal with China in the 21st century. A new BA in Chinese Studies has been launched and a Bachelor in Commerce (International) with Chinese Studies, a Higher Diploma and Masters in Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business will start in September 2008.

Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Entry Requirements
Avg Entry Requirements 3
Please express the average academic achievement entry requirements for your institution. Please convert your domestic requirements to the US Grade Point Average system. The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data. A number of our graduates are members of the Irish Senior International Rugby Team including Ronan O'Gara. The new coach to the Team, Declan Kidney, is an alumni of the university.
