Became an independent university in 1967 after a 70 year relationship (sometimes stormy) with the University of St Andrews -now a key partner. But its origins go back over a hundred years to 1881 when University College, Dundee was founded with the forward looking mission of "promoting the education of persons of both sexes". Has doubled in size over recent years to 15,000 students and over 3,000 staff.

Most recent merger was with the Dundee campus of Northern College in late 2001 to create a seventh faculty - the Faculty of Education and Social Work. In 1996 the university absorbed the two local nursing colleges to create a single School of Nursing and Midwifery within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. In 1994 merged with next door neighbour Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.

Medical school based a couple of miles away at Ninewells Hospital. Some nursing and midwifery students based at modern Kirkcaldy campus - 30 miles away. Faculty of Education and Social Work currently based at the Gardyne Road campus at the east end of the city but with plans for a new Building at the city centre campus

A "buzzy" dimension - not ancient, not new but with the best of both worlds and the worst of neither. Quality of life and an enviable cost of living - plenty of personal space, a friendly atmosphere, easy escape routes to the hills and the sea, and prices to suit shallow pockets. Five minutes walk will take you to the High Street shops, theatres, galleries, the highly successful Dundee Contemporary Arts centre which houses the University's Visual Research Centre, and a variety of pubs. On the other hand you may prefer to spend lunch time on campus visiting the swimming pool, sports centre, concerts, exhibitions, lectures, free language classes... Dundee itself claims to be "Scotland's univerCity" - with more students Per head of population than elsewhere.

The University of Dundee is growing fast in both size and reputation. Broadly-based, it has performed extremely well in both teaching and research assessment exercises, has spawned a range of spin-out companies to exploit its research and has a model wider-access programme.

Dundee is one of the four major cities of Scotland. It was first granted city status 800 years ago. Dundee and its people have a long history of invention and innovation including:the first telephone service in the world outside London; the first street lights were developed in Dundee; the postage stamp; the submarine telephone cable; and, the hole-in-the-wall cash dispenser.

The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data.
