A School of Art was founded in Exeter in 1855; by 1922 it had become the University College of the South West and was given part of the present-day Streatham Campus. The Royal Charter, under which we became the University of Exeter, was granted in 1955.
In the late 1970s St LukeÂ’s College of Education became part of the School of Education and in 1993 CSM, Cornwall merged with the University. Recent developments include the Peninsula Medical School, a partnership between the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, and the University of Exeter in Cornwall.

Today, we have nearly 12,000 students of whom 8,500 are undergraduates; big enough to be fun, but small enough to be friendly. The University now has three main sites – two in Exeter and one at Tremough, near Falmouth in Cornwall.

We had a great reputation: one of the UK’s most popular universities – 9 applications per place with 93% of accepted applicants in 2003 putting Exeter first, high quality teaching – all subjects assessed since 1995 have scored 20+ points (out of 24) with two-thirds scoring 22+ points, a research-led university – the latest (2001) Research Assessment Exercise rated 98% of Exeter subject areas in the top grades (5*, 5 or 4), ranked in the top 20 UK Universities and in the top 10 for best degree results by The Sunday Times (September 2003), an enviable employment record – major employers target Exeter graduates irrespective of the degree subject
:
The majority of you will study on the Streatham Campus, which is the biggest of the three University sites, and is built around a country estate overlooking Exeter. The campus is one of the most beautiful in the country with lakes, parkland, woodland and gardens with many rare species of plants and trees. It offers a safe and enjoyable environment for study. The High Street is only a 15-minute walk away, so at Exeter you can enjoy the advantages of a campus-based university without missing out on city attractions.

On the Streatham Campus all the teaching buildings together with the Sports Centre, the Library, the shopping centre, and the restaurants, coffee bars and bars of Cornwall House, Devonshire House and the Peter Chalk Centre are within walking distance of each other. The halls of residence and most of the University flats are also only a short walk away, so you will not have to waste time or money on travelling.
