Founded in 1614

In line with our rich academic tradition, the University of Groningen enjoys an international reputation as a leading research university.

Our wide range of high quality degree programmes covers the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. Research and knowledge combined with an interdisciplinary approach form the basis of our programmes.

The university is utilizing its heritage to generate innovation. The degrees awarded have been accredited by the Dutch Government and are internationally acknowledged.

A truly international environment

The university offers a variety of degree programmes with English as the language of instruction. In addition to welcoming a large international student population, we maintain long-term partnerships with foreign universities around the world with similar high standards, participate in international networks and incorporate international themes in our programmes. We are proud of our Double Degree programmes and a great number of students use the extensive opportunities for exchange. The university is co-operating with universities in several developing countries, thereby contributing to the further development of academic teaching and research world-wide.

Studying at the University of Groningen

The university is home to over 23,000 students who are welcomed into an inspiring and stimulating atmosphere. Teaching is characterized by small groups and the encouragement of student input, leaving ample room for discussion, the generation of ideas and the creation of knowledge. In a work environment that rewards quality and achievement, the university offers balanced study and research paths that vary in intensity to encourage everyone to develop their individual talents.

  • BachelorÂ’s / MasterÂ’s programmes
All our programmes are grounded in research, giving students the opportunity to share in the best and latest knowledge. The seamless transition motivates many students to continue on to a related MasterÂ’s programme after successfully completing their three-year BachelorÂ’s degree. MasterÂ’s programmes last between one and two years. For those students with research as a special focal point, we offer two-year MasterÂ’s programmes associated with Graduate Schools.
  • Graduate Schools / PhD
With the purpose to ease the transition between the MasterÂ’s and PhD levels and produce graduates with strong research skills, the Graduate Schools create a supporting environment with scholars excelling in their expertise. Talented students can write their PhD proposal as part of their MasterÂ’s degree. In the four-year PhD programmes, students conduct their own research. The Graduate Schools provide a balanced mix of expert supervision, tailor-made postgraduate training and the freedom to pursue your own ideas within set research themes.
