Nottingham is the Times Higher's 'University of the Year' for 2006/7.

Nottingham's first civic college was opened in the city centre in 1881, four years after the foundation stone was laid by former British prime minister, W E Gladstone. In 2007 it has three campuses in Nottingham, pioneering campuses in China and Malaysia, medical and nursing schools in Derby, Lincoln and Mansfield as well as Nottingham, and the UK's first new Vet School for more than half a century.

Each of the University's five faculties - Arts, Social Sciences Law and Education, Engineering, Science, and Medicine and Health Sciences - is comprised of a number of schools, some of which, in turn, are further divided into departments or divisions. This structure provides a strategic grouping of related academic disciplines. It also ensures that the management and administration of academic life runs efficiently.
Whilst strategic decisions, such as changes in regulations, are made at University or Faculty level, day-to-day academic activity takes place at the level of department or school. Students will find that these units organise open days, issue handbooks and organise timetables and exam boards.

University Park is the main campus, home to 3,000 students, workplace to a further 26,000 students and staff, and located just a short bus or bike ride from Nottingham city centre.
With its modern teaching facilities, halls of residence, conference and exhibition centre, multi-arts venue, and award-winning library, it is no wonder that this is one of the largest and most attractive campuses in the UK.
The newly extended Portland Building, houses the Students' Union and the International Students' Bureau, as well as shops, banks, recently refurbished bars and restaurants, making this the hub of student life at Nottingham.
The University prizes the landscaped setting of the campus and welcomes the local community to enjoy the walks, parks and gardens that are found there. Long-established woodland and more contemporary gardens are all part of the environment that has made the campus a Civic Trust Green Flag Award Winner for five successive years. A real hidden gem is the Millennium Garden, designed around the theme of 'time' and conceived as a quiet, reflective place in which to escape the hustle and bustle of campus life.

Nottingham is a major sporting city with two football clubs and first-class rugby union, cricket and ice hockey teams, the National Water Sports Centre and one of Europe's largest Lawn Tennis Association centres.
This focus on sporting excellence can be seen throughout the University. For students there are around 70 different sports clubs which use facilities on campus and elsewhere within the area. The Sports Centre at University Park provides facilities for activities from badminton and basketball to archery and aerobics. The Fitness Centre provides a mixture of cardiovascular equipment, resistance machinery and free weights.

Nottingham is one of the Britain’s most popular universities and one of the highest ranking performers in the independent external assessments of teaching quality and research performance. Nottingham is a multi-campus university and the 330- acre University Park, set in extensive woodland, parks and playing fields, is one of the largest and most attractive campuses in the UK. It has modern teaching facilities, 12 halls of residence, a conference and exhibition centre and an award-winning library. The University is a founder member of Universitas 21, an international association of universities, and has an international reputation for teaching and research. The University’s ambition to be a truly global institution has won royal approval with the announcement of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade for 2006 and a Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation for the School of Pharmacy in 2007. University departments have consistently scored highly in the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s independent assessment of teaching. Nottingham is also one of the top four universities earning research funding from private industry and commerce. We have a thriving community of more than 30000 students. The University is proud of its international structure and its tradition of welcoming all races, cultures and religions. There are more than 7,000 students from more than 140 countries currently following undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The city of Nottingham is geared towards the needs of a large student population with a variety of entertainment and some of the best shopping outside London. Our Promise to International Students The University of Nottingham believes that students achieve most when they are secure and comfortable. We therefore offer a comprehensive package of care and support from the first point of enquiry right though to alumni membership. Entry Requirements
Avg Entry Requirements 3
Please express the average academic achievement entry requirements for your institution. Please convert your domestic requirements to the US Grade Point Average system. The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data. Main claims to international academic or non-academic excellence

Nottingham is one of the Britain’s most popular universities and one of the highest ranking performers in the independent external assessments of teaching quality and research performance. The latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirmed The University of Nottingham's position as a world class research-led institution. Over 60% of the University's RAE scores identified research as being of a level of international excellence. This achievement has helped put Nottingham within the Sunday Times top ten UK universities, the THES World Top 100 and Shanghai Jiao Tong Index World Top 100.

The purpose of the RAE is to enable higher education funding bodies to distribute public funds for research based on the quality of research carried out at each institution. The RAE gives quality ratings for research across all disciplines. A scale ranges from 1 to 5* according to how much of the work is judged to reach national or international standards.

At the end of 2005-6, the University announced a record £122 million of new research grants and contracts. Awards for the current year are in line with this figure. The University derives about 20% of its research income from industry sponsors, reflecting its strengths in taking promising new findings from bench to business.

The University's research strategy is based on the recruitment, promotion and retention of individuals with exceptional research credentials and a policy of encouraging research that crosses academic boundaries. Collaboration with other international centres of research excellence is actively encouraged.

Significant investment in new research infrastructure at Nottingham is planned for the period 2007-9, which will further improve the quality of equipment and buildings to further the University's research aims.

The University pursues a co-ordinated approach to research management, with two Pro-Vice Chancellors for Research responsible for the University's research strategy through the Research Committee and its Research Strategy Groups. Delivery of the strategy is the remit of the Research Innovation Services team, which is also responsible for maintaining the University's relationships with external funding organisations. Two academics have won Nobel Prizes since 2003 (Sir Peter Mansfield in Medicine and Sir Clive Granger in Economic Science).
