The Times Good University Guide 2009

Studying at The University of Nottingham

Nottingham is a dynamic and popular institution located in the heart of the UK, and consistently ranks among the top British universities.

We have an internationally recognised reputation for teaching and research, boosted by our Times Higher Education Awards as well as 2 Nobel prizes in Medicine and Economics.

On a measurement of 'research power' — which takes into account both quality of research and the number of research-active staff — Nottingham is 7th in the UK according to independent analysis by Research Fortnight.

We offer over 400 degree programmes on both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including taught (BA/BSc etc, MA/MSc) and research (MPhil, PhD) degrees, in the following Faculties:

″ Arts and Humanities
″ Education
″ Engineering
″ Law & Social Sciences (including the Business School)
″ Medicine and Health Sciences
″ Sciences

More information on the courses we offer can be found in the online prospectuses accessible via the undergraduate and postgraduate links on our homepage.

The International Office is dedicated to helping international students who are looking into studying with us and we look forward to hearing from you.

Why Nottingham?

You may be able to learn a lot from league tables and ratings, but what really distinguishes Nottingham from other universities?

We believe that at Nottingham you will have a truly unique and global experience. Not only do we have students from more than 140 countries, we encourage a global perspective amongst all students and staff as well as participation in our global network.

You can spend part of their degree abroad at our campuses in Malaysia and China, with one of our many Erasmus and Study Abroad partners or within our U21 global network. Our Careers Centre not only offers advice on finding work in the UK, but also in your home country or even a third country. And our global alumni network can help you build your social and professional network when you graduate.

Interactive Nottingham

Nottingham's University Park campus is one of the UK's most attractive campuses, set in 330 acres of tranquil woodland and is only 10 minutes by bus from the city centre.  You can take a virtual tour of our campuses here.

Want to find out more about your course? You can download undergraduate departmental brochures or our Parents' Guide. You can also find out more about what is going on in your subject through downloading our podcasts.

The University's filmmaker-in-residence showcases at Test Tube to show 138 short films about Nottingham scientists and engineers, staff and students, and really gets under the skin of the curiosity, dedication and innovation.

You can also find further useful links on our International Office pages.

Libraries
With over 14 libraries across all our campuses, the University has millions of books, manuscripts, journals and periodicals on loan. Our libraries are open 24 hours and provide inter-library loans as well as online journals. Library facilities include traditional reading areas where silence is the rule, as well as areas designated for group study and where refreshments are available for vital study breaks. [insert library picture]

Laboratories
Nottingham's recent appointment to the status of a 'Science City' is clearly supported by the world class facilities that can be found at the University and by the continued investment in laboratory accommodation and equipment, much of which is used to conduct ground breaking inter-disciplinary research. As a student you will also have access to these facilities.

Computer access
University-wide access to 24-hour computing facilities is made possible through a large number of Computer Resource Areas. All of our student accommodation is connected to the network  and there is WiFi access for laptop users. [insert computer picture]

Sports facilities
University provides a fantastic chance for students and staff to try a huge range of activities using facilities on your doorstep. Opportunities to take part are available at all levels from elite athletes competing at the highest level to those just wanting to play a casual game with their friends or simply get fit and have fun doing it! With over 75 societies in the Athletic Union there is a great deal of choice for getting involved.

You will find multi-level gyms, sports halls, swimming pool, sports pitches and playing fields, boat houses and much more. The majority of facilities are situated on the beautifully landscaped University Park campus with pitches for the representative teams just opposite the University and further pitches situated at Grove Farm less than 3.5 miles away. Facilities are also provided at Sutton Bonington Campus and a new sports centre opened at Jubilee Campus in August 2005. There is also a boathouse for use by the Rowing Club situated approximately 500m downstream of Trent Bridge, next to Nottingham Forest Football Club. [insert sports picture]

Nottingham city has more sports facilities per head of population than anywhere else in Europe there are plenty of opportunities to both watch and join in a wide range of sports at world-class venues such as the National Ice Stadium and BritainÂ’s National Watersports Centre.

The University of Nottingham is again confirmed in the intercontinental higher education elite, in global tables published this year (2008). The established world rankings index compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranks Nottingham 10th in the United Kingdom. The Times Higher World Rankings in 2008 place Nottingham in the Top 1% of all universities worldwide. The institution is now firmly established within the worldÂ’s 100 best universities in both tables.

Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, The Sunday Times league table places Nottingham 8th amongst British universities, based on consistent performance over a ten year period:
This year the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2009 stated:

“……Always knocking on the door of our elite top 10, a place to study at Nottingham remains among the most sought-after in higher education. Teaching and research excellence spans all disciplines with only Cambridge and Manchester boasting more than Nottingham’s 33 top-rated teaching subjects.”

Shanghai Jiao Tong UniversityÂ’s 2008 table of the worldÂ’s leading universities ranks Nottingham research in Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy 29th best anywhere in the world.

Nottingham academics undertaking research in Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy perform strongly alongside colleagues at The University of California Berkeley (32nd), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (33rd) and Cornell University (30th) — and Nottingham is one of only 5 British institutions in the World Top 30 for Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy, with Oxford, Cambridge, University College London and Imperial College London.

The table — which reflects the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the volume of highly cited researchers within the faculty, and the number of articles published in the most prestigious academic journals — also places Nottingham in the world's Top 50 for Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the world's Top 100 universities in the Social Sciences. Arts and humanities subjects are not included in the Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings.

Studying at a World-Class Institution
Nottingham students are learning from truly pioneering academics. In Pharmacy, to take just one example, every member of the academic staff is also a teacher, and the number of medical research staff involved in the provision of lectures and teaching sessions here is extremely high.

Nottingham — alongside Cambridge and Manchester — was rated top choice by leading companies recruiting UK graduates in an independent survey for The Times newspaper.

It enjoys one of the highest completion rates anywhere in UK higher education. Once students enrol on a Nottingham degree course, nearly all will go on to complete their studies.

Coming to Nottingham to study is a hugely attractive proposition — borne out by the continuing number of high calibre applicants (Top 5 choice in 2008) and by the record number of international students, who now represent more than 143 nations, and who help to create truly cosmopolitan campuses. Nottingham's student mix is diverse — and thanks to high levels of investment in student financial support, and an imaginative programme to attract the broadest range of talented applicants — it is becoming more reflective of society, with the number of students from lowest-income groups rising from 17 per cent to 22 per cent since 2005.

Award-winning Students
Our students swept the board at the most recent Student Radio Awards, had the highest production count and earned numerous accolades at the National Student Drama Festival in 2008, ensured that we are ranked in the Top 10 by the British Universities Sports Association, and currently hold the honour of UK Graduate of the Year, and have been national winners of Students in Free Enterprise for an amazing four years in succession. A vibrant and inclusive Students' Union this year won the 'Participation' award at the NUS Awards. In recognition of the breadth and quality of student representation.

Award-winning Campuses
The University's campuses in Nottingham UK, Malaysia and The People's Republic of China are award-winners in themselves. Open parkland sites, with gorgeous landscaping and signature architecture, they offer an unrivalled setting for learning. The University Park campus in Nottingham UK has won a Green Flag award for five years in succession, and was singled out by judges who declared Nottingham the UK's Best Large City in the recent Britain in Bloom accolades.

Accommodation

Choosing where you will live is an important consideration when you are off to university. At Nottingham you are guaranteed a room in University-arranged accommodation for up to three years of University arranged accommodation. Whether it’s catered halls or self-catered student villages, or the private sector – we’ll help you find somewhere that’s just right.

If you have a disability, or any specific personal requirements such as a medical condition or a preference for single sex accommodation, we can provide accommodation to suit your individual requirements. For families or others who prefer to live off campus, the University's Accommodation Office offers help and advice.

Our website at www.nottingham.ac.uk/crs is packed with information to help you find your perfect place and apply for accommodation online. Don’t forget to take a tour of our accommodation. And when you have found your new home you can apply for accommodation online.

Catered halls
You have your own room in a hall with cooking done for you as part of your accommodation fee. Your room will also be cleaned every two weeks. Bedding is provided if required, free of charge, which you are responsible for laundering. Our team of hall staff will be busy in the background making sure you have everything you need, so you can get on with those important things at university – studying and socialising.
We have two catered sites to choose from – University Park and Jubilee Campus, which are home to a total of 14 catered halls. There are different room types available, depending on which location you choose.

Self-Catered halls
Great for coming and going as you please! You have your own room, typically in a shared flat with a kitchen/diner for making your meals. There are also self-contained en-suite studios available at one site.

Catered halls of residence (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nh/students/accomm/catered_halls/) provide a more 'home from home' service. 15 halls, accommodating around 4,000 students across the University Park, Jubilee and Sutton Bonington campuses, are owned and managed by the University. Three meals a day are provided as part of the accommodation fee with a varied menu that caters for a range of dietary requirements.

The self-catering student villages (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nh/students/accomm/self_catered_residences/) combine an independent lifestyle with a close-knit student community. There are over 2,000 self-catering places available in purpose-built flats, each housing four to seven students, across three sites. Each flat has its own study bedroom; kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared. Self-catering sites are owned by external developers who work in close partnership with Accommodation Services to ensure that the flats meet their high standards.

We can also help find accommodation for students who have specific requirements such as those with a partner or family, disability or special dietary requirements.

Accommodation Range

Accommodation prices range depending which type of accommodation you apply for. For detailed information on prices and types of accommodation, please visit http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nh/students/accomm/.
