In 2007, the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked UQ 33rd in the world and was the only Queensland university ranked in the top 50 world wide.

Students wishing to improve their English language and academic study skills can undertake intensive English language and academic communication training at the University’s Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ).
Programs at ICTE-UQ are offered as stand-alone English language courses or taken prior to a UQ program. To qualify for admission to degree programs at UQ, students must meet minimum English language entry requirements.
Package offers comprising English Language Studies plus the principal UQ program may be available to students where the only outstanding requirement for admission is English.
ICTE-UQ is government-registered and accredited by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS). It is a member of the national association English Australia, and is an approved International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) Administration Centre for Brisbane.

For admission into undergraduate programs at The University of Queensland, applicants must have:
- Completed recognised upper secondary or equivalent Year 12 studies to the required standard. Note that some programs have a limited quota for students. In these instances the required standard is a minimum and a higher standard may be required to gain entry.
- Satisfied English language requirements
- Satisfied individual program requirements (ie. specific subject prerequisites, audition or interview). Find out specific program requirements on the relevant program page at www.uq.edu.au/study
Applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Meeting minimum entry requirements does not guarantee entry to the University's undergraduate programs.
Students who do not meet these criteria may consider taking the Foundation year bridging course, Certificate IV in University Preparation, offered by International Education Services (IES).
For high achieving students commencing a Bachelor Degree. Applications for these scholarships are invited from Australian school leavers including International Baccalaureate students.
To be eligible to apply for an Academic Scholarship, applicants must:
be an Australian Citizen, or a Permanent Resident of Australia or the holder of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa; and
be completing Year 12 in 2008; and
not have undertaken any previous tertiary study other than studies undertaken as part of Year 12 studies; and
have applied for a tertiary place through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC); and
be intending to undertake an undergraduate program of study as a full-time Commonwealth-supported student at The University of Queensland in 2009 (or 2010 if a deferment of your tertiary offer is approved).
Recipients of an Academic Scholarship must remain enrolled as full-time students of The University of Queensland to be eligible to receive their scholarship. Approval to undertake less than a full-time study load may be given in exceptional circumstances.
Recipients of an Academic Scholarship will be required to achieve satisfactory academic progress during the tenure of their scholarship, as set out in the Academic Scholarship Guidelines.

Two working internships available for engineering students in the areas of mining, mechanical, mechatronic or electrical engineering or information technology who are Australian citizens or permanent residents and not committed to an employer. Successful applicants will be encouraged to undertake their fourth-year undergraduate thesis in an area relevant to current research projects within CRC Mining (with the prior approval of your program leader), and will be supervised by a CRC Mining researcher.

Available annually to domestic students who intend to enrol full-time in either the second or third year of one of the following programs in the year of the award - the Bachelor of Engineering; or a dual program including a Bachelor of Engineering, in the field of mechanical or civil engineering. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement in their program; and an interest in mechanical or civil engineering within the construction industry; and personal qualities, including leadership potential; and other evidence that may be considered relevant by the selection committee to future success by the student in the construction industry.
