The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia's premier learning and research institutions, ranked 33rd in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement in 2007. It is the largest and oldest university in Queensland and has produced generations of graduates who have gone on to become leaders in all areas of society and industry. The University is a founding member of the national Group of Eight, an alliance of research-strong "sandstone" universities committed to ensuring that Australia has higher education institutions which are genuinely world class. It belongs also to the global Universitas 21 alliance. This group aims to enhance the quality of university outcomes through international benchmarking and a joint venture e-learning project with The Thomson Corporation.

UQ's outstanding research funding and industry collaboration has pushed the boundaries of research to achieve world-acclaimed breakthroughs, including recent triumphs in cervical cancer, dengue fever and space Scramjet research.

The University hosts over 130 research centres, including the Queensland Brain Institute, Sustainable Minerals Institute, Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Australian Institute for Bioengineering & Nanotechnology, Diamantina Institute for Cancer, and the Immunology and Metabolic Medicine Institute for Social Science Research.

Additionally, in ensuring teaching excellence, UQ adopts flexible learning as part of its overall strategy to deliver an enhanced, student-centred approach to education.

UQ teachers have a 100 percent success rate in the Carrick Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, which recognise teaching excellence in higher education.

The University of Queensland's graduates have a strong record of success in attaining employment and income levels well above average. UQ qualifications are highly regarded by employers everywhere and our graduates form a powerful network of success across all industries and endeavours in all corners of the globe. In recent years, the international standing of UQ has been reinforced with a rapid growth in fee-paying students from abroad, as well as strong growth in postgraduate studies.

Why choose The University of Queensland?:

Queensland's only University Ranked Top 50 worldwide
In 2007, the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked UQ 33rd in the world and was the only Queensland university ranked in the top 50 worldwide.

Additionally, Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2008 ranked UQ among the top five Australian universities overall of the top 100 Asia Pacific universities.

Five star educationAt a national level, UQ was independently ranked as one of Australia's best universities in the 2008 edition of The Good Universities Guide. UQ was awarded the maximum five-star rating for five key performance indicators, including getting a job, staff qualifications, research grants, research intensivity and toughness to get in (St Lucia campus).

Research intensive
The University is one of the top three research universities in the country. UQ leads industry collaboration and research funding in Australia, with our researchers constantly pushing the boundaries to achieve world-acclaimed breakthroughs, including recent triumphs in cervical cancer, dengue fever and space Scramjet research.

Students have the opportunity to study with researchers of international renown. UQ's Professor Ian Frazer recently co-developed a world-first cervical cancer vaccine that will save the lives of millions of women around the world, while in 2006 nanotechnologist Professor Max Lu was the only Australian to make Phoenix Weekly's list of the top 50 most influential Chinese in the world.

UQ has created more world-class research institutes than any other Australian university and has one of the highest participation levels of any academic institution in Australia in the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program.

Teaching excellence
The University has won more national teaching awards than any other university in the history of the awards, as well as obtaining a 100 percent success rate in the Carrick Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, which recognise teaching excellence in higher education.

UQ boasts more than 2400 highly qualified academic staff dedicated to teaching and research, many of whom are recognised internationally as leaders in their fields.

Global reputation
The University is a founding member of the Group of Eight (Go8) – a leading group of Australian universities that collectively enrols one-third of all university students and conducts 70 percent of all university research in Australia. Go8 graduates boast a full-time employment rate almost five percent above that of other Australian universities.

UQ is also one of only three Australian members of Universitas 21 – a select international network of comprehensive, research-intensive universities committed to world-best quality and practice.

Quality programs
UQ offers the most comprehensive range of high-quality programs in Queensland, with 350 programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Students can choose from a range of program levels, including graduate certificates, masters programs or higher degree research programs, to obtain new qualifications, or build expertise in specific areas.

In addition to the adventure of discovering a new culture first-hand, or improving a foreign language, students broaden their career and academic opportunities and gain a different perspective on their studies. Study overseas is highly rewarding and exciting, helping students build confidence, increase self-awareness and establish a worldwide network of friendships.
