Surrey is a truly international university, drawing students and staff from 140 countries around the globe, focussing its high quality research and teaching on the real world, whilst also recognising its responsibilities to the region it serves. We offer high-calibre teaching, a top-rated research base, and an excellent quality of life in a beautiful campus setting. For students, we provide an exciting and supportive environment to live and study in; for staff, a stimulating atmosphere in which to work. For potential partners, we offer both the willingness and experience to forge mutually beneficial alliances.
Although originally founded as a science and engineering-focussed institution – and enjoying a world class reputation in these areas - Surrey now offers excellence in a broad range of subject areas, spanning science, engineering, human sciences, arts, business management and medicine. The 2005 Guardian League Table ranked Surrey in overall 18th position out of 122 universities for the quality of our undergraduate programmes, with six in the top ten.
Turning to research, the results of the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise confirmed Surrey as one of the UK’s research elite. With nearly 90% of our research rated as national or international standard, we are 5th in the league table for research-led universities. Three research groups – Electronic Engineering (including Computing), Subjects Allied to Medicine, and Sociology – achieved the maximum 5** rating, whilst seven other areas, including Psychology, Physics and European Studies, gained grade 5 ratings.
Surrey enjoys a strong reputation for innovation and enterprise. Our Research Park is one of the most successful in Europe, home to 140 companies, employing 2,500 staff. Our most successful spin-out company, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) is a world leader in the design, build and launch of small satellites. To date, SSTL has launched 23 satellites and has a current order book of £30m. Earlier this year, SSTL was awarded a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. In total, the University has received three Queen’s Awards and two Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for its academic and entrepreneurial activities.
We have recently completed several major new build and refurbishment projects on our Stag Hill campus, with initiatives such as International House (our new postgraduate student residences), the Advanced Technology Institute (a high technology beacon for leading-edge, cross-disciplinary scientific research) and our state-of-the-art Management School building. Our plans for our new Manor Park campus will enable us to create a truly world class campus for the 21st century. The first building on Manor Park, the prestigious Postgraduate Medical School, has recently been completed and has won first prize for a new building in Guildford Borough Council’s 2005 Heritage & Environment Award. In addition to staff from the University’s world class-rated activities in Biomedical and Life Sciences, the School also houses colleagues from the NHS in a regional centre of excellence in health education and research. Manor Park will also provide a high quality student-staff residential village – due to open in 2006 - other landmark academic buildings, and world class sporting and social facilities.
Universities have a fundamental role to play in the culture and wellbeing of modern society, and Surrey aims to be the best in all that it does – working for, and shaping the world. I hope that you enjoy your visit to our webpages and that they encourage you to learn more about our University.
