The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, is Australia's first university. Over the past 150 years, the University has built an international reputation for its outstanding teaching and as a centre of research excellence.

As one of Australia's leading universities, the University of Sydney is a key member of:

- the Group of Eight - Australia's leading research intensive universities
- Academic Consortium 21 (AC21) - an international network of educational, research and industrial organisations in Asia, the United States and Europe
- the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU - Sydney is one of three Australian institutions in this group of prestigious universities drawn from Asia, the United States and South America, and
- the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) - an international alliance of 16 leading research universities.

The University of Sydney continues to rise in global rankings, confirming its place within the top 40 universities in the world. The UK's Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) World University Rankings published in October 2006 ranked us at 35th in the world and the same league table ranked our teaching and research in Humanities at 5th best in the world. In the Newsweek global 100 for 2006, the University of Sydney was one of only two Australian universities placed in the top 50 in the world.

Latest figures show that the University of Sydney has been confirmed as Australia's leading research university. Sydney researchers have been awarded more than $49 million by the Australian Research Centre (ARC) for 120 research projects commencing in 2007 - the largest amount awarded to any university in Australia.

The success of the University's research is underpinned by research grants from the Commonwealth, NSW State Government, industry and international agencies as well as our extensive network of collaborative partnerships.

We have four of Australia's premier Centres of Excellence funded by the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council; we host two Major National research Facilities and are active participants in twenty-two Cooperative Research Centres.

Our goal is to continue to develop the reputation of the University of Sydney as an institution where pure and applied research and research training are conducted at nationally and internationally recognised standards, including research relevant to the economic, social and cultural well-being of Australia and the region.

Accommodation

The University of Sydney offers a wide range of on-campus accommodation, allowing students to choose the level of support or independence they prefer. University-owned accommodation provides furnished, self-catered, single or shared accommodation in houses and units of various sizes, while the seven residential colleges on the Camperdown/Darlington campus offer full-board accommodation in furnished, single study/bedrooms with shared facilities. Some colleges also offer self-contained, self-catering accommodation. There are also residential facilities at a number of other campuses and research facilities.
The Sydney University Village, located adjacent to the Camperdown campus but close to the thriving inner-city suburb of Newtown, accommodates 650 students in a village-style environment which includes retail facilities, a food court, a bar and meeting rooms. The Village offers a range of furnished, self-catered accommodation, from single studios to 5 bedroom apartments.
The University of Sydney Accommodation Service provides information about accommodation options and maintains an extensive database of private rental, full board, temporary and exchange-for-work accommodation located near the University’s campuses or within easy access via public transport.

Students must possess one or more academic qualification such as the HSC or an equivalent (or interstate or overseas equivalent), a tertiary record or a special admission qualification, and their results in these qualification/s must meet the minimum standard to be competitive against other applicants. Some faculties also have additional selection criteria, and special entry schemes are also available.

The University recognises a number of other international secondary qualifications from individual countries. If students are applying on the basis of qualifications obtained in another country, their application will be assessed for its equivalence to Australian tertiary entry standards. They may also need to sit an English proficiency test.

Language Support

The University of Sydney provides a range of English language support for students. The University’s Learning Centre provides an extensive program of workshops and individual assistance to both students of non-English speaking background and English-speaking enrolled students. Workshops cover language skills in areas such as oral presentation, discussion, notetaking and critical reading. Some faculties also provide support through specially tailored units of study that focus on communication skills within the discipline, including the development of English. The Centre for English Teaching provides pre-enrolment English classes.
