The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data. Local students
The University recognizes different kinds of academic excellence. Outstanding Achievement
Awards are offered to students who achieve exceptional academic results in their high school
studies.

In addition, and uniquely in Australia, the University also recognizes that sometimes excellence is measured in more than marks. The University of Sydney Scholarships for school leavers is the University’s flagship program. Scholarships are awarded for a combination of high achievement in
the final school examinations and demonstrated achievements across a broad range of criteria. This program aims to identify the leaders of tomorrow who not only excel academically but also demonstrate commitment to excellence in a number of areas, including involvement in the community, creativity, initiative, motivation, and communication skills.

The University is also committed to equity and access, and, as well as administering the federally funded Commonwealth Learning Scholarships, offers a substantial number of institutional equity scholarships to support gifted students who have been advantaged by reason of low socio-economic status, regional location or physical disability.

International Students
All Undergraduate Outstanding Achievement and merit based scholarships available to commencing
Australian undergraduate students are also available to international students undertaking Australian
year 12 qualifications.

The University also awards a number of academic merit scholarships to currently enrolled international
students. These scholarships take the form of full tuition, half tuition payments or financial contributions to expenses. In 2008 the University awarded 87 International Merit Scholarships. Students are selected for these scholarships on the basis of academic performance during their studies with the University.

Student Exchange scholarships
To encourage greater outbound mobility, the University awards a number of scholarships to its students who are undertaking a student exchange with an international partner university. In 2008, the University awarded 227 scholarships of varying amounts to assist students with the cost of undertaking a student exchange. In addition the Faculties also offered a range of financial support to Exchange students who were not in receipt of a University Exchange Scholarship.

Entry Requirements

Applications for University of Sydney undergraduate degrees must meet two basic requirements. Students must possess one or more academic qualifications such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or overseas equivalent; a tertiary record or a special admission qualification. Results in these qualifications must meet the minimum standard to be competitive against other applicants for that degree. Some faculties also have additional selection criteria, and special entry schemes are also available.

The University does recognise a number of international secondary qualifications from individual countries. If students are applying on the basis of qualifications obtained in another country, their application will be assessed for its equivalence to Australian tertiary entry standards. They may also need to sit an English proficiency test as part of their application.
