Area studies degrees provide an interdisciplinary study of a geographical, national, federal or cultural region. Whether your interest lies in Latin America, Asia, Africa or the Middle East, a degree in area studies will introduce you to a new language, contemporary debates and issues in your chosen region, and a range of different topics ranging from politics to literature to economics.

In addition to helping you to develop many transferrable skills, your course will also provide you with opportunities to acquire specialist knowledge in the field of your choice, preparing you for these six careers:

Journalism

Whatever your interest or location, a niche specialty of your own within a specific region, as well as strong analysis and writing skills developed by way of your degree, will help you gain greater credibility with potential employers and editors during a job interview or a pitch if working freelance.

Foreign service/diplomacy

While a career in most diplomatic services today will not require a specific degree level or subject area, popular course choices for diplomats include area studies, international relations, law and economics.

Fluency in multiple languages is a definite asset for roles in this sector, along with strong verbal and writing skills, cultural adaptability, and a strong understanding of international politics.

International law

With individuals and organizations increasingly finding themselves confronted with international regulations and laws, it has become fairly common for area studies graduates to enter into legal careers.

Brace yourself first. If you want to become a fully-fledged lawyer, you will need to complete a conversion course or a Master of Laws (LLM), and complete the required professional exams and training. Also, bear in mind that competition for positions in law firms can be fierce and stress levels stack up high!

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)

A good route in to NGO careers can often be through volunteering. Most area studies courses will require you to complete work experience abroad, and some programs may even provide you with the opportunity to volunteer with an NGO overseas.

Teaching and/or academia

An obvious choice for many area studies graduates is to go into research, teaching or academia. Based on your objectives or education level, you might have to complete a PGCE or a PhD to land your first job.

Military

Depending on your interests and values, a career in the military might be the right choice for you. Your global edge, research skills, foreign language abilities and knowledge of a specific area might make you a great fit for a job in intelligence or humanitarian aid.
