Romanian student Valeria Burdea was the winner of the 2012 QS Scholarship for Central and Eastern European Women. She shares how she’s getting on with her chosen program, her ambitions for the future, and some advice for other scholarship applicants.

I am very happy to have chosen the MSc in Economics (Track Behavioral Economics and Game Theory) at the University of Amsterdam, since up until now, it has offered me exactly what I was looking for.

That is, it’s a course which clearly links theory and real-life applications, with passionate and inspiring professors who are always willing to help and guide students, and also hardworking and knowledgeable colleagues.

Overall, even though the program is quite intense and requires a significant amount of effort, the challenging, competitive and constructive environment makes it a fun, enjoyable and motivating experience.

What next?

After finishing my current study program, I am considering applying for an internship at an international organization such as the EU or UN, preferably in an economic research department.

This may also offer me the possibility to work in one of their Romanian offices. However, I acknowledge that for now, I might not be able to find a suitable job in my home country, as the research field is very little developed there.

Even so, I believe that gaining experience in another European office of such an international organization would help me develop skills that I could later apply in Romania, without being restricted by the under-development of some areas.

Also, I am thinking about applying for a PhD position in the US after acquiring some work experience, as this is very important for becoming a specialist in my field of study.

Advice on getting a scholarship?

I believe a successful scholarship application is one that shows its writer is focused, motivated, passionate, daring and intelligent. Such an application must start with a clearly stated goal, which is relevant for today’s environment.

Afterwards, its content must be very well structured, with each idea presented in a short sentence, and then explained logically and supported by facts and examples.

Lastly, a very important aspect when writing the application is that one should be honest. Honest ideas are those that bring out the real determination and creativity in people, and this will be reflected in how good the essay will end up being.
