British Universities score top in world university rankings
The Times Higher-QS World University Rankings are out and again UK universities are well represented across all areas of study. With 32 of the worlds top 200 universities being British, the UK has shown its continued dedication to excellence in education. Only the US, which places 57 out of the top 200 universities, had more top ranked institutions.
Whats more, four out of the top ten world university rankings were UK universities. University College London became the forth British university ranked within the top ten in the world. UCL jumped from a ranking of 25th in 2006 to 9th in 2007. Imperial College London also improved on its 2006 ranking moving from 9th place to 5th. Cambridge and Oxford Universities hold joint rankings as the 2nd best universities in the world.
In 2006 there were 29 British universities ranked in the top 200. A year later and all but one of those universities are still there. There has also been an increase of four UK institutions taking places on the list of the worlds top 200 universities and increasing the total number to 32. Most notably the University of Lancaster has leapt up 81 places and is now ranked at 148 in the list of the worlds top 200 universities. Professor Paul Wellings, vice chancellor of Lancaster University said, We are delighted with Lancaster's performance in the global rankings and it is a reflection of Lancaster's overall academic quality. Student feedback has been very positive and our own study showed that the excellent teaching and the investment in our campus contributed to high level of overall satisfaction in their university experience.
The universities of Dundee, Leicester and Surry are the other institutions which now place comfortably within the Times Higher-QS World University Rankings list of the top 200 universities.
Of the British universities ranked as one of the top 200 universities in 2006, all but six have increased their ranking in 2007 and further improved the UKs reputation as an excellent place to study.
British universities hold up well to global competition in all subject areas of study. The top 100 universities from all over the world were ranked by subject area: Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Life Sciences and Biomedicine, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Technology and IT. At least two of the top 10 universities in each subject area were UK institutions. UK universities showed most potential in the subjects of Arts and Humanities, where a total of 14 UK institutions ranked in the top 100 universities. Oxford and Cambridge were rated within the top ten institutions for all subject areas except IT where Cambridge placed 5th and Oxford ranked 12th.
Universities in the UK also scored very highly in their attractiveness to both international staff and students. The Times Higher - QS World University Rankings allot five percentage points to universities for the number of their staff that come from other countries, and a further five for their percentage of overseas students. The UK universities listed within the top 200 universities all scored highly, especially compared to their US counterparts, showing their commitment to international study, international students and globalization.
