New undergraduate students start early at Aberdeen University

Students embarking on their first year of an undergraduate degree can start early at one university in Scotland. QS Top Universities found out the University of Aberdeen is inviting students to come on campus three months early!

The University of Aberdeen has launched a scheme enabling new students to enjoy the benefits of their prospective academic life, three months early.

The Associate Student Scheme allows students who will officially begin their undergraduate degree in September 2008, to experience the range of facilities the university has to offer, such as libraries, gyms, computers and cafes, throughout summer.

Rachel Sandison, Head of Student Recruitment and Admissions, University of Aberdeen said the initiative is designed to engage students with the university before they commence their studies. "New students who are about to embark on their university career often spend the summer months highly anticipating both the academic and social aspects of their future lifestyle. The Associate Student Scheme is an extremely unique project which allows students to enjoy the array of facilities and activities which the University of Aberdeen has to offer before they officially matriculate.”

Ms Sandison said enabling undergraduate students to use library facilities to study for exams, access computers and experience the full range of sports equipment and venues which are available, will provide them with the opportunity to explore, experience and engage with the university campus before they begin their studies.

"We believe that giving students the chance to get to know the University over the summer months will not only benefit them in terms of their own personal academic and social interests, but ultimately enhance their overall university experience."

The Associate Student Scheme is open to all applicants from the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire area, who hold a firm offer of acceptance to begin studies in September 2008. It is hoped that the scheme will be rolled out to include postgraduate students and students from outside the immediate locality next year.

“This is indicative of our commitment to enhancing and developing the experience students enjoy throughout their studies,” Ms Sandison said.
