Kumamoto University is located in the heart of Kyushu Island, in the southern part of Japan, and is rich in nature. We have the huge volcanic Aso mountain in the eastern part of Kumamoto prefecture. Kumamoto University is situated in Kumamoto city where historic Kumamoto castle is surrounded by many trees. So, the city is called FOREST CITY. We have a hill clad in fresh greenery behind the campus, giving us a tranquil atmosphere for studies. Kumamoto is also known for its high quality fresh water springs, which provide drinking water to the residents.
As one of the oldest National Universities in Japan, Kumamoto University has been at the forefront of culture, advancing science and technology, and has contributed to the local community and global society for more than 100 years. Recently, we have been selected by the Government as one of the 22 Research Universities in Japan and as one of the 37 Top Global University Projects. Currently, the university is home to more than 8,100 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students, including 470 international students from 47 countries (as of May 2015).
