Southern Federal University

Southern Federal University is one of the largest scientific and educational centers in Russia. It traces its history back to 1915. SFedU nowadays combines the traditions of a classical university with innovative infrastructure, implements educational programs and develops fundamental and applied research in the field of engineering, materials science, and information technology, interdisciplinary social and humanitarian research.

Today, about 24,000 students are studying in two campuses located in Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog. Research and training in engineering is conducted on the Taganrog campus, and the Rostov campus offers a wide range of courses in the natural sciences and humanities. SFedU offers 81 undergraduate programs, 20 specialist degree programs, 199 master's programs, and 26 doctoral programs. The quality of academic programs is confirmed by the state accreditation agency of the Russian Federation, some programs also have quality confirmation from external accreditation agencies, including ACQUIN and AQAS, etc. (Fundamental computer science and information technology (bachelor's, master's), Applied mathematics and computer science (bachelor's, master's), Psychology (bachelor's, master's), Psychological support for education of persons with developmental problems (master's), etc.)

The percentage of foreign students, 25 Erasmus partner institutions, 50 exchange agreements and 10 double-degree programs evidence the fact that the internationalization of the educational activities of the university is actively developing. Annually more than 2,500 foreign students from 78 countries study at SFedU at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels. Foreign students have the opportunity to sign up for the preparatory year to study the Russian language.

SFedU is actively involved in the Bologna process, and its graduates receive the European Diploma Supplement. SFedU conducts a world-class research in the field of information technology, intelligent materials, nanotechnology, future medicine and robotics. Students can conduct research and make prototypes in the international laboratories of SFedU, centers for the collective use of scientific equipment and engineering centers. Free access to collaboration spaces, sports grounds, the university’s swimming pool, and the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports events allows you to spend your free time productively on the university’s campus.

In general, international students’ adjustment to a new lifestyle and educational system may be quite challenging. In order to create a positive learning environment and decrease anxiety, Southern Federal University provides international students with a variety of campus resources at their disposal. There are several units at SFedU responsible for development and promotion of student support services, such as SFedU Students’ Union, International Student Club, and Students’ Creativity Club, that offer an enormous range of cultural, community, leisure, and sport activities to take advantage of on campus.

The interaction between students while taking part in creative events and festivals such as “The Spring Creative Festival”, “The Golden Voice of SFedU”, “The Freshman Cup”, “Studio Student Theatre Festival” and “The Creative Marathon” reveals students’ artistic potential and sets the stage for a cross-cultural exchange of ideas and traditions.

While increasing students’ participation in intercultural events such as “International Kitchen”, “Mother Language Day”, “The Friendship of Nations Concert”, “International Movie Club”, and other intercultural on-campus activities, SFedU establishes a reliable environment for enhancing cultural awareness, sharing of cultural experiences, and overcoming language barriers. 

International students of SFedU are welcome to join a broad range of sport clubs. National teams from Colombia, Ecuador and Turkmenistan in different sports as well as various sections of mini-football and volleyball are among them.
