Student achievements  A group of SRM University students bagged the second position in a competition last month, launching successfully CanSat, a model satellite to read atmospheric conditions. The competition titled Planetary Atmospheric Entry Vehicle was organised by The American Astronautical Society (AAS) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) at Texas, and sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), USA.  NASA sponsors design contests in hopes of interesting students in aeronautics and engineering careers. The challenge was to submit ideas and designs for aircraft or engine concepts and technologies that would assist in meeting the project's goals for more environmentally friendly aviation by the year 2020. Those goals include better fuel economy, fewer emissions, less noise and better performing airplanes. All of the non-U.S. winners came from India. First place went to two seniors at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, for their engine concepts. Two seniors from Anna University in Chennai came in second for their blended wing body design. Third place went to four undergraduates from SRM University in Kattankulathur for their airliner concept.  Students and faculty members of SRM University have designed, developed and built a nano satellite, SRMSAT in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The objective of the satellite is to monitor and estimate CO2 and H2O in the atmosphere in the tropics globally using a grating spectrometer. The satellite structure is a cuboid, the dimensions are 302 X 302 X 302 mm3 and the mass of the satellite is 10.9 Kg. The electrical power subsystem is responsible for generating, conditioning and distributing electrical power to all the sub systems and the power generation is done from three body mounted solar panels. The On Board Computer (OBC) is interfaced with the payload, a space GPS, Magnetometer, Beacon, Transmitter and Receiver. The communication system involves transmitting data from the satellite to the ground station (downlink) at 437.5 MHz and the uplinking. The satellite has undergone rigorous tests at ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore and is qualified for the launch. The SRMSAT orbit is in a low inclined 20 degree orbit at a height of 867 KM. SRMSAT is launched on 12th October 2011 along with Megha Tropiques by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV - C18) from SDSC SHAR Centre, Sriharikota.  Two students of SRM School of Management, Ashwini Balasundaram and Jolly James have got a reason to be happy for they have been selected to be a part of the prestigious Second Journal Conference on Trade, Economics and Finance (JCTEF), 2012, at Hong Kong.  Three students from SRM University represented India, at the Harvard National Modal United Nations (HNMUN) 2012, happened in Boston from February 16 to February 19, 2012.  Market for Alternative Investor (MAI), Bangkok and Sasin Business School, Thailand conducted an International Business Plan Competition in which The plan developed by the students of SRM University has been selected as 12th Best Business Plan out of this 16.  Yagnaseni Roy, student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kattankulathur Campus and Eva Sharma, from the Department of Computer Science Engineering, Ramapuram Campus selected for the Semester Abroad Program top at MIT with 5 upon 5 score.  K.Mohan, a third year Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (EIE) student of SRM University, has seven national awards and six state awards to his credit. A native of Karur District of Tamil Nadu, Mohan has filed for six patents already.  5-10% of SRM students, pursue higher studies in US/U.K/Singapore universities after their undergraduate program at SRM. Community Development Activities Having reached many a mile stone in research and academic areas, the university consider it its bounden duty to play a constructive role in developing the surrounding predominantly rural population by providing free health care facilities through its 1500 bedded multi-specialty hospital, facilitating skill development to the unskilled labor force and offering educational services at primary and secondary school levels. It also undertakes infrastructure development works in the nearby villages by adopting them.
