In May 2009, the UAEU announced the launch of the first PhD program at a national university in the United Arab Emirates. From September 2009, UAEU will begin accepting suitably qualified students into doctoral programs in each of its Faculties. UAEU PhD program will allow UAE nationals to pursue doctoral studies in their own country at the premier national university. It will also attract PhD students from other nations. The program will follow an American model, which involves one year of course work to be followed by research and the writing of a dissertation over a further two to three year period. â?¨Standards will be high, with admission and program quality to be managed by the Board of Graduate Studies, chaired by the Provost, Professor Wyatt R. Hume. The PhD program is part of the wider strategy to increase research capability at UAEU and represents and important step in the transformation of UAEU into a world-class research-intensive university.
