At the University of Surrey, we share our knowledge and make new discoveries through our innovative research, business collaborations and teaching. We inspire people to do wonderful things, and help them to acquire the tools they need to make a meaningful contribution to the world.
The University of Surrey, named as University of the Year by The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016, has risen in all major league tables for UK universities in the past year. We climbed from sixth to fourth place in the Guardian University Guide 2016, moved up to eighth place in the Complete University Guide 2016 and achieved eighth position in The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016. In the recent National Student Survey we attained fifth place out of 139 institutions (excluding specialists) across England, Scotland and Wales, and the QS World University Rankings place us in the top 1% of the world's universities.
Personal and professional development is embedded at the heart of our students’ learning experience. Exceptional teaching and knowledge is put into context through our pioneering Professional Training placements. We are proud to be No 2 for graduate employability compared with other chartered Universities in England.
Wonder should be at the root of all research. At the University, our research is having a practical and positive impact on people’s lives, touching communities around the world. With over 50 per cent of all research outputs featuring an international co-author and more than 100 strategic partnerships across the globe, international activities have become increasingly important.
We’re connected to the local community, the regional economy and the wider world by our fundamental desire to collaborate. Whether partnering with the biggest names in technology and communication to building the 5G Innovation Centre on our Guildford campus, hosting 110 high-tech companies on our own Research Park, or stimulating over £1bn of economic activity in the southeast of England every year.
A new £45million School of Veterinary Medicine is open for the start of the 2015 academic year, with world class-clinical skills centres, a pathology facility and teaching, research and diagnostic laboratories.
The campus is a ten-minute walk from the centre of Guildford and includes two lakes and playing fields with some of the best facilities in the country. In April 2015, the University won the award for ‘Best University Facilities’ at the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2015. The University has invested heavily in facilities in recent years, including £130m on student accommodation, £36million into Surrey Sports Park – with a refurbishment of its health and fitness centre planned for later this year – and £16million on the Library and Learning Centre. The £4.5million Ivy Arts Centre features a 200-seat theatre, dance studio and performance spaces.
The main campus is the centre of social life, and has seen improvements to leisure facilities including new dining and social areas. Guildford has plenty of retail, cultural and recreational facilities and the proximity of London (35 minutes by train to London) is an additional attraction to many students.
