If you haven’t visited us yet, prepare to be charmed. Surrounded by the stunning South Downs National Park, the Sussex campus is a beautiful, safe environment that has everything you need for a brilliant student experience.
Our campus boasts iconic Sixties architecture and natural surroundings. Step out of the lecture theatre and get your head together in an expanse of green space.
We’re committed to giving you the best student experience and have built our new Student Centre at the heart of campus. Designed as the go-to place for information and advice, it also provides flexible space to work and collaborate, and well as room to eat and relax.
We have plenty of facilities on campus. There’s a pharmacy, medical centre, optician, international food store and a supermarket with a post office. You’ll also find a variety of places to eat, serving international dishes, as well as mind-blowing vegan cakes.
For cultural nourishment, we have our own arts venue, the Attenborough Centre for
the Creative Arts, with a varied programme of events featuring international artists
and performers.
To keep you fit, Sussexsport works with the Students’ Union to provide a packed
sports programme. There are more than 50 group exercise classes a week. Our two
sports and fitness facilities have the latest cardiovascular and resistance machines,
sports halls, tennis and netball courts. We also have grass and floodlit artificial pitches for cricket, rugby, hockey and football.
From big builds to small changes, our campus is always evolving. Over the next few years, our plans are transformative. With an ambitious programme of works already underway, our West Slope development is set to deliver a mix of student accommodation and spaces for socialising, studying and wellbeing services. Our Network Replacement Programme will see the implementation of a modern, secure, high-speed wired and wireless data network, making our campus even better.
We’re also mindful of our responsibilities to the environment. With our natural surroundings and an impressive list of biodiversity experts on our staff, we’re ideally placed to reach our goal of becoming the most biodiverse campus in the UK.
Following consultations with our staff and students, we’re committed to setting aside at least 42% of our campus land to nature by 2027, and sharing our space with wildlife through creating bee hotels, hoverfly lagoons and hedgehog houses. We also aim to recycle 50% of our waste, and prioritise responsible food and water production and consumption.
Because of our natural environment, you’ll share campus with an amazing variety of birds, small mammals, butterflies, bees and insects. Just be careful you don’t trip over a hedgehog on your way home.
Our dedicated Housing Team can help you find the accommodation that’s right for you, whether that’s on campus or in the local area.
If you’re an international Masters student in your first year or a new PhD student, and you meet the criteria of our housing guarantee, you can state a preference for accommodation on or off campus. All our accommodation is self-catering, with communal kitchens and en -suite or shared bathrooms.
If you choose to share, you’ll be with other postgraduate students, rather than
undergraduates. It’s a great way to make new friends – often from different cultures and countries.
We also have accommodation suitable for students with a disability. Check with us before you apply, to help us ensure we can find the right place for you.
If you’re planning on bringing members of your family with you to Sussex, we advise that you consider the significant cost and challenges of securing suitable accommodation before you make firm plans to travel with dependents.
At Sussex, we don’t have any University-managed accommodation for families,
including any emergency accommodation.
We advise that you don’t travel to the UK with your dependents. You should come to the UK on your own first to find and secure accommodation in the private rental sector that best meets your family’s needs. We’re not able to find this accommodation for you.
Accommodation guarantee
If you’re a full-time international Masters student (from outside the UK), and apply
for accommodation by 1 August 2024, you’re guaranteed University-managed
Accommodation.
If you’re a full-time first-year PhD student studying for a full academic year starting in September 2024, have received an offer to undertake a PhD at Sussex by 1 August 2024, and apply for accommodation by 1 August 2024, you’re guaranteed University-managed accommodation.
Student life
Whether you’re a UK student or from overseas, returning to study or coming straight from an undergraduate degree, you’ll find that our Sussex community is keen to give you a warm welcome.
We’re proud of the support our teams offer to help you settle in, and the social activities available to keep you entertained.
You automatically become a member of the University of Sussex Students’ Union when you enrol. This means you can take advantage of student discounts in local clubs and shops. We also have over 180 clubs and societies. From the A Cappella Society to the Zumba Society, you’ll always find something to do.
The Sussex community is a rich cultural mix, with staff and students combined from over 150 countries (HESA Staff and Student Records 2021/22) and collaborations with over 160 universities globally. We celebrate this diversity with events such as One World Week, during which everyone has the chance to take part in activities that focus on global cultures.
As well as being a great place to meet and collaborate with other students, our new Student Centre is where you can find information, advice and guidance. Our staff can help with a range of matters, such as accessing bursaries and hardship funds, and support on visas, as well as what to do if you have any issues that affect your studies. They provide information about specialist services both on and off campus.
Our beautiful Meeting House is the base for our interfaith chaplaincy. This stunning building, filled with light and colour, is home to religious services, and many social and cultural events, as well as being a place for quiet contemplation and mindfulness sessions. We also have a Muslim prayer facility on campus.
At Sussex you’ll not only explore the subject you love, but you’ll also enhance your professional development. You’ll gain the skills you need to go out into the world and make a meaningful contribution.
So that you can stand out in the job market, we offer you as much support and guidance as you need. Some of our courses offer placement or field- trip opportunities, both in the UK and abroad. We’re also keen to help any student with a good idea for a business to get started on their own, whatever subject they’re studying.
Our Entrepreneurship Programme has many great initiatives and competitions to
stimulate and inspire you. They include our annual StartUp Sussex competition, which has helped many former students on their career journeys, and our Social Impact Prize, for those who want to create not-for-profit businesses that benefit society. Previous winners have gone on to develop sustainable products, launch innovative customer services and set up social enterprises.
Throughout your time at Sussex, and for three years after you graduate, our Careers and Entrepreneurship team will support you. We run workshops to help you take those first steps towards your future career – whether it’s helping with job searches, or explaining some of the more complicated recruitment processes. You could also get involved in a range of employer partnership activities.
We also offer the Sussex Student Consultancy project, enabling you to gain
paid work experience while honing your skills, building networks and enhancing your CV. You could work with a local business, focusing on sustainability and business continuity. You’ll consolidate the knowledge gained from your course and apply it in practice.
Your school of study will also provide advice and support, and you’ll have access to alumni mentors and expert panels.
Our Doctoral School offers guidance, training and development, as well as access
to funding opportunities. There’s dedicated study, research and meeting space for
doctoral students, such as the Sussex Research Hive. Our Researcher Development Programme offers workshops and online training to help manage your research and plan your career.
And, supported by the University, the Sussex Innovation Centre provides a vital
link to business. The Centre provides support and space for start-up companies
and has a close working relationship with research groups at the University.

Yes, we offer a wide range of scholarships for both UK and International Masters students that vary in value from £2,000 up to £10,000. You can see a list of all the scholarships we offer, along with information on external funding sources, tuition fees, accommodation and living costs, and student budgeting on our funding pages on our website.
No, there’s no fee when you apply for a Masters course at Sussex, however, if you require a visa to study in the UK you may need to pay a tuition fee deposit before we can issue your Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) number, which you will need for your visa. The deposit doesn’t need to be paid until after you have met all your academic and language conditions and accepted an offer to study with us.
If you visit our website you can view a list of all the Masters courses we offer. If you click on the course you are interested in you can scroll down to the entry requirements to see UK entry requirements and International entry requirements. For the International entry requirements there is a drop down list where you can select your country to see what we are looking for. You’ll also find the English language requirements if English isn’t your first language, and any exemptions.
We can be flexible with our entry requirements and take into account a number of factors when considering applications. Each application is assessed on a case by case basis and our admissions team will need to look at the whole application before a decision is made.
If you apply for a Masters which starts in September, you are guaranteed University-managed accommodation if you:
If applicable, you will be sent a housing offer once you have paid your Masters tuition fee deposit for international students. If you are exempt from paying this, you do not have to pay the deposit to secure guaranteed University-managed accommodation.
If you’re not exempt from the tuition fee deposit, we’re unable to allocate you accommodation until you have paid, so do try to pay as soon as you can.
For the majority of our Masters courses the deadlines are 1 August for International applicants and 1 September for UK applicants, but you should always check the course page for the specific course you are interested in. Our Social Work MA/PG Dip has a January deadline and applications are dealt with by UCAS.
All of our Masters courses start in September, except for the MBA, which also has a January start. You can apply for up to three Sussex Masters courses per year and we advise that you apply as soon as you are able to, as some courses do fill up.
