Language requirements
If the language of instruction is Dutch, proficiency in both Dutch and English is required. If the language of instruction is English, proficiency in English is required.
Dutch
Utrecht University accepts the following exams as proof of proficiency in Dutch:
NT2, programma 2 (Dutch as a second language, level 2). This test is administered by the Department of Examinations of the 'Informatie Beheer Groep'. It is advisable to register with the IB-Groep as early as possible.
Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal: ‘Profiel Academische Taalvaardigheid’ (PAT) or "Profiel Taalvaardigheid Hoger Onderwijs" (PTHO).
If you are a native speaker of Dutch with a foreign diploma, please contact the Admissions Office for more information. If you have no knowledge of Dutch, please note that it takes at least one year to attain a relatively good command of the language.
English
Utrecht University accepts the following exams as proof of proficiency in English:
IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.0 overall band, 5.5 for writing.
TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 83. Institutional scores are not accepted.
Cambridge Certificates: Advanced English or Proficiency in English, minimum score C.
If you are a native speaker of English and/or hold a degree from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA or South Africa, you are exempted from taking an English language test.
Please note! Chinese students have to take the IELTS or the internet-based TOEFL test.
