Tuition Fees Tuition fees in the Netherlands vary for EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students. The tuition fee for Dutch and other EU/EEA students is determined by the Dutch government. The government pays the majority of the cost of studying, and the tuition is only a contribution to the total cost. The cost of studying for non-EU/EEA students are not covered by the government, and so the University determines these based on the actual cost. Exceptions to the non-EU/EEA tuition fees You are entitled to pay lower tuition fees (i.e. EU/EEA tuition fees) if: you have the Surinam or Swiss nationality; you receive a UAF grant (for refugee students in the Netherlands); you meet the nationality requirement for a government study grant from the Informatie Beheer Groep; you have been continuously enrolled at Utrecht University since before 2006-2007 and have paid the lower tuition fees from 2006-2007. Accommodation

Accommodation A place to stay Utrecht is a city of higher education, and students make up a considerable part of its population. This has a very positive effect on the atmosphere in the city, but it also means that the demand for student housing usually exceeds the supply, and finding a place to stay in Utrecht can be a real challenge. Utrecht University wants to assist its international students and staff members as much as possible in finding suitable temporary accommodation. Accommodation reserved for students and staff Utrecht University does not own any housing or accommodation. Instead, the University has an agreement with SSH Short Stay Solutions, a local housing corporation that offers temporary furnished housing. They reserve a range of furnished accommodation especially for international students and staff of Utrecht University. The University covers the administrative fee if you make use of this offer. However, Utrecht University does not guarantee the availability of housing, and the number of reserved accommodation is limited. Please note that the reserved accommodation for students is only available for exchange students and international students who enrol in an international degree programme, and who do not yet live in the Netherlands. It is not available for international students who enrol in a Dutch taught programme, nor for Dutch students who enrol in an international degree programme. Upon arrival If you arrive before the start of your rental contract, after office hours or during the weekend, you may need to spend a night in a hostel or hotel. Affordable options are: Budget hostel Strowis in Utrecht city-center, Bed and Breakfast Utrecht City Center or Hostel Stay Okay in Bunnik. Finance and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships Utrecht University is aware of the financial challenges some international students face and has therefore set up its own scholarship fund: the Utrecht Excellence Scholarships. This scholarship is for outstanding prospective students who are applying for a Bachelor's programme in Economics or at University College Utrecht or for a specific master programme. The Dutch Government and other organisations also offer scholarships, fellowships and grants. Additional information Bachelor students A limited number of grants and scholarshipare available for Bachelor students. We recommend that you check with organisations in your own country. You can also check the Grantfinder website mentioned above. Master students Please note that scholarships are mainly targeted at students with very high results. We recommend that you also look for funds in your own country and through the Grantfinder website mentioned above. Exchange Exchange and visiting students are not eligible for a grant or scholarship from Utrecht University, but your home university may have programmes that you can apply for. Loans EU/EEA-students may qualify for the following programmes offered by the Dutch government: The Student grant and loan system (Dutch: studiefinanciering) for EU/EEA-students. This loan will be converted into a grant if you obtain a final degree. A Tuition fee loan. EU/EEA-students who are not entitled to a student grant can apply for a `tuition fee loanâ€™ (Dutch: collegegeldkrediet). You repay the borrowed sum after your studies. The American federal government assists students from the United States with a Federal Aid programme. Utrecht University has been approved for the Federal Family Education Loan Programs (FFELP) as a foreign school, and can certify Stafford and PLUS loans. More information on FAFSA and FFELP.

English Language Support

Language courses It is easy to get by in the Netherlands without knowing any Dutch since most people have a basic or good knowledge of English and are usually quite willing to practice it. However, if you would like to learn (or improve your) Dutch while living here the James Boswell Institute offers a special â€˜Welcome Dutch language courseâ€™. And if you would like to get a good understanding of Dutch society and culture before starting to live here, you can attend a four week course at Utrecht Summerschool. All the international Master's degree programmes offered by Utrecht University are taught in English, and a good command of the language is a prerequisite for admission. If you are not a native speaker and you would like to further develop your English language skills during your stay in Utrecht the James Boswell Institute also offers a number of English language courses. Entry Requirements

General requirements To qualify for admission to a Utrecht University Bachelor's programme, you must: have completed an appropriate secondary school diploma. be proficient in Dutch and/or English. pay the application fee.

Non English Language Requirements

Applicants from China All Chinese students must register with Neso China for a Neso Certificate before they can submit an application for a visa. The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) does not process Chinese visa applications without the Neso Certificate. In order to register for a Neso Certificate, you have to take the IELTS test (International English Language Testing System / Academic version) or the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT) and send the IELTS or TOEFL Test Report Form to Neso China together with the Neso Certificate Registration Form and copies of your diplomas and degrees. Make sure you apply for the Neso Certificate as soon as possible, but no later than May 15 if you wish to start your studies in September. TOEFL/IELTS Requirements

Language requirements If the language of instruction is Dutch, proficiency in both Dutch and English is required. If the language of instruction is English, proficiency in English is required. Dutch Utrecht University accepts the following exams as proof of proficiency in Dutch: NT2, programma 2 (Dutch as a second language, level 2). This test is administered by the Department of Examinations of the 'Informatie Beheer Groep'. It is advisable to register with the IB-Groep as early as possible. Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal: â€˜Profiel Academische Taalvaardigheidâ€™ (PAT) or "Profiel Taalvaardigheid Hoger Onderwijs" (PTHO). If you are a native speaker of Dutch with a foreign diploma, please contact the Admissions Office for more information. If you have no knowledge of Dutch, please note that it takes at least one year to attain a relatively good command of the language. English Utrecht University accepts the following exams as proof of proficiency in English: IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.0 overall band, 5.5 for writing. TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 83. Institutional scores are not accepted. Cambridge Certificates: Advanced English or Proficiency in English, minimum score C. If you are a native speaker of English and/or hold a degree from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA or South Africa, you are exempted from taking an English language test. Please note! Chinese students have to take the IELTS or the internet-based TOEFL test.

Accommodation Price Range

Rental periods and fees University reserved accommodation can be rented for a fixed period only. The rental agreement cannot be cancelled, except in certain serious and unforeseen circumstances as described in SSH Short Stay Solutionsâ€™ Terms & Conditions, which can be found on their website. The fixed rental periods are: Exchange students (international students who study in Utrecht as part of their degree programme at another university): 5 months (September 1st 2009 until January 31st 2010 OR February 1st 2010 until June 30th 2010 OR 10 months (September 1st 2009 until June 30th 2010) Bachelorâ€™s and Masterâ€™s students (international students who enrol in an international degree programme in Utrecht): 12 months (September 1st 2009 until August 31st 2010) Rental fees are roughly between â‚¬400 and â‚¬700 per month and include utilities (water, heating, electricity). If you rent a room through SSH Short Stay Solutions from the accommodation reserved for Utrecht University, you do not pay an administrative fee. You do pay a deposit, but this covers your first and last monthâ€™s rent. The rental agreement cannot be cancelled once you have signed it. Although international Bachelorâ€™s programmes run for 3 years, bachelorâ€™s students can only apply for reserved housing for the first 12 months. After the first year, you have to find accommodation yourself. Masterâ€™s programmes run for 1 or 2 years. Masterâ€™s students can initially apply for 12 months only, but they can reapply for another year in March 2010.
