Professors in the plant sciences and zoology stand among the most productive and widely published scholars in the nation. Graduate students in these fields work with partners from the state’s food and farm industries to bolster Washington’s competitive edge in the global economy.
GLOBAL ANIMAL HEALTH
About three-quarters of deadly infectious diseases in humans originate in animal hosts. In the University’s School for Global Animal Health, faculty scholars tackle global infectious disease challenges at the animal-human interface. Veterinary and health science research conducted in WSU’s School for Global Animal Health and College of Veterinary Medicine is among the most frequently cited by peer scientists in peer-reviewed publications. Graduate students interact with top scientists, practitioners, and leaders in global animal health on campus and in the field.
CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES
Researchers bridge disciplines to address the threats of energy supply, global warming, pollution, and resource depletion. Graduate students collaborate with leading scholars to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of engineering, plant sciences, and economics, using that knowledge to design sustainable resources for the built environment, explore renewable energy sources, distribute and manage the smart grid, and inform progressive public policies on energy use.
WSU researchers have achieved eminence in many other fields as well. For example, in the molecular biosciences, faculty members are noted worldwide for their work in protein biochemistry, DNA repair, structural biology, and reproductive biology. The physics department has world-renowned research groups in astrophysics, material and optical physics, matter under extreme conditions, and novel states of matter. College of Pharmacy professors have won national recognition for their influential diabetes research. In the liberal arts, the English department is home to nationally recognized authors and alumni. Research conducted in the Department of Sociology and the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication influences policy that touches lives nationwide.
Founded in 1890, WSU is Washington’s only land-grant research institution. It has campuses in Pullman, Spokane, the Tri-Cities (Richland, Pasco and Kennewick) and Vancouver, extension offices in every county, and online degree programs accessible worldwide. The main Pullman campus, nestled among the beautiful rolling hills of southeastern Washington, serves more than 18,000 students. In addition to its graduate and professional programs, the University confers bachelors’ degrees in nearly 100 majors.
