Undergraduate Profile
University College Cork (UCC) was originally established in 1845 as one of three Queen's Colleges in Cork, Galway and Belfast. In 1908 it became a constituent College of the National University of Ireland and a constituent University of the National University under legislation enacted in 1997.
The university has a beautiful and cosmopolitan campus with the gothic revival style main quadrangle building, modelled on a typical Oxford College, at its centre. The campus is within easy walking distance of Cork city centre where cafes, restaurants and night life combine to create a vibrant European city atmosphere. Cork is a university city with almost 30,000 students in different institutions of higher learning and was European City of Culture in 2005.
Today University College Cork is a major research-intensive university delivering world-class research in academic departments and in research centres of national and international significance. The university boasts a student population of over 17,000 students in 2008/09 including some 12,000 undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor Degree programmes, over 3,000 postgraduate students pursuing higher degrees and over 1000 visiting and exchange students. The international student population includes students from 93 different countries. The university is committed to lifelong learning and there are also over 2,000 part-time students pursuing Adult Continuing Education courses on campus and in centres throughout the Munster region.
UCC is the university of first choice for growing numbers of students from Ireland and overseas. The university offers honours bachelor degree programmes across the Humanities, Business, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Science, Food Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and the Clinical Therapies.
UCC offers a superb student experience characterized by the quality and range of its academic programmes, excellence in teaching and learning, responsive student support services and outstanding opportunities for personal development through its many clubs and societies. Faculty
| Number of Faculty Staff | Headcount: 1,265 FTE: 1,180 | Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, hospital residents and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator. |
| Number of International Faculty Staff | Headcount: 404 FTE: 391 | Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained. |
