Helsinki University of Technology - TKK is the second-oldest university in Finland, and the leading university for science, technology and architecture. There are approximately 15,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and over 3,500 members of staff. TKK offers degree programmes for a Master of Science in Engineering and degrees in Architecture and in Landscape Architecture. There are 19 degree programmes and 11 international Masterâs programmes. Every year over 40% of Finland's first-grade students in the field of technology, and 60% of doctoral students, graduate from TKK.
The Technical School of Helsinki, established in 1849, was renamed the Technical University of Finland in 1908 and given the right to award doctoral degrees. Helsinki University of Technology will celebrate its 100th anniversary as a university in 2008. Throughout its history, it has pursued a strong commitment to the highest level of scientific research and teaching. The education TKK provides is intended not just to produce good graduate engineers and architects but also to engender genuine interest in science and technology.
The university is based in Otaniemi in Espoo, 10 km from the centre of Helsinki, on a campus designed by Alvar Aalto. Otaniemi has the highest concentration of high technology in the Nordic countries. A unique combination of education, study and business is densely packed into this small area. Otaniemi has twice been chosen as one of the most innovative areas in Europe, and it has also been awarded the EU Award of Excellence. Several head offices of some of Finlandâs largest companies â one of them Nokia â can be found near Otaniemi.
The âTeekkarikyläâ student village, home to some 3,000 students of technology, is also located in Otaniemi. There are over one hundred student organizations on campus which provide a range of opportunities to take part in pastimes of various kinds from sports to music.
Internationalization is an important area of focus in the TKK strategy. Over 1,200 students from more than 90 nationalities study at Otaniemi every year. TKK is continuously increasing the number of international undergraduate and postgraduate students. At the moment, 11 Master's programmes, 6 international non-degree programmes and about 400 courses are offered in English.
TKK is part of more than 30 international university networks, has more than 50 bilateral mobility agreements throughout the world and more than 100 Erasmus agreements in 25 countries which provide great opportunities for visiting and cooperating with universities abroad.
Research
Research at TKK covers a broad spectrum of the main fields of technology. Top-level research is focused on the energy and environmental sectors, metal and machine construction, the forest sector, health and well-being, and information and communications technology and micro- and nanotechnology. The university coordinates 13 graduate schools, which are supported by the Ministry of Education.
Half of the Finnish companies involved in product development engage in research cooperation with universities. The strong points of TKK research are its excellent links with business, other universities and institutes, and good international contacts. Every year, around 20 new companies are set up on the basis of TKK research.
Library
The TKK library is the technological central library of Finland, supporting and promoting technological and scientific research, teaching and study. Its library services in the field of technology are among the best in Europe â and free of charge. It also provides information for companies.
Otaniemi International Innovation Centre (OIIC)
The Otaniemi International Innovation Centre assists TKK researchers in seeking sources of funding for their research, in drawing up research contracts and in the protection and utilization of their research data.
The adult education provided by TKK supports the professional development of technology graduates in particular and also promotes the transfer of TKK research data to working life. Continuing education is provided by TKK Dipoli, the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK) and the TKK Lahti Centre. Students can study for an MBA in the TKK MBA programme. Open university studies are offered by the TKK Open University.
Faculty
| Number of Faculty Staff | Headcount: 1,645 FTE: 1,494 | Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator. |
| Number of International Faculty Staff | Headcount: 251 FTE: 227 | Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained. |
| Number of Inbound Visiting Faculty Staff | Headcount: 167 | Number of academic faculty staff contributing to teaching or research at your university in the last 12 months who are visiting from an overseas institution for a minimum period of at least 3 months. |
