World Rankings

Founded in 1895 and a University since 1966, Aston is an established, "old" University known for world class Teaching Quality and Research and a Graduate Employment record that is consistently amongst the best in the UK - ranked 8th out of all 120 Universities in the UK for graduate employment in 2008 by the Sunday Times.

All of the University's academic, social and accommodation facilities are based on our attractive, self contained green Campus, right in the centre of Birmingham, one of Europe’s liveliest and welcoming cities. We are proud of our close-knit, safe and friendly campus atmosphere which provides the perfect environment for academic success and a fantastic social life. Around 70% of our students take Sandwich or Year Abroad programmes – excellent experience integrated into their degrees

With around 8,000 students at the University our students benefit from being part of an academic and social community large enough to be lively and diverse but small enough so as not to feel overwhelming. We also have extensive student accommodation, with a guarantee in place on campus for first year students.

This all contributes to one of the UK's lowest student drop-out rates and highest student satisfaction ratings.

We offer a wide range of single, joint and combined honours Degree Programmes in the subjects covered by our four Academic Schools:

Aston Business School
School of Engineering & Applied Science
School of Life & Health Sciences
School of Languages & Social Sciences

Faculty

Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 931 FTE: 468

Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, hospital residents and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.
