The 2006 shortlist of 5 universities reads "Leicester is not the biggest, richest or most famous university in the UK. But by any measure it is one of the best". Leicester was shortlisted for the same award in 2005 and is the only university shortlisted for two consecutive years.
Leicester is a member of the 1994 Group of internationally renowned universities engaged in leading-edge research and high quality teaching. Our research strengths stretch across our five faculties. Over 90% of academic staff are research active. 13 departments gained the 5 or 5* ratings that indicate internationally significant work in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.
The research conducted by the University has the strongest impact of any Midlands university and the tenth greatest impact amongst universities in England according to the Guardian (30th October 2007) . Overall the University is ranked 20th for its research out of 130 universities.
Described as a "first class university" Leicester is ranked 12th in the UK out of 113 universities by the UK Complete University Guide published on 24 April 2008. The University performs well in the Guardian University Guide (14th), Times Good University Guide (14th) and Sunday Times University Guide. Leicester is one of just 21 UK universities to feature in the world's top 200 universities (joint 16th in the UK and 151st in the world in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Table).

Faculty
| Number of Faculty Staff | Headcount: 1,435 FTE: 1,299 | Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator. |
| Number of International Faculty Staff | Headcount: 396 FTE: 295 | Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff.
