Loughborough University has an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research, strong links with industry, and unrivalled sporting achievement.

Based on a safe, 433-acre, single-site campus – the largest in the UK – the University has plenty of open space, gardens and sports areas interspersed with academic buildings and student accommodation. The campus is located on the outskirts of the market town of Loughborough, with easy access from the M1 and East Midlands Airport. London St Pancras is only 90 minutes away.

Loughborough is well known for the quality of its teaching, verified by teaching quality assessment scores averaging 22.5 out of a possible 24. The University gained a top five place in the 2006 National Student Survey, with nine out of its 23 departments topping their subject tables, and recently published national league tables place Loughborough among the top ten UK universities.

To sustain the high quality of teaching the University has developed strong academic, guidance and welfare systems to support its students throughout their education. In 2006 Loughborough won a national award for the UK’s Best Student Experience.

In addition to first-class teaching, the University also delivers research that matters and has a reputation for the relevance of its work, driven by society’s need for applied solutions to real-world problems. The most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) recognised research of international excellence in all departments, with the coveted 5* grade awarded in Sports-related Subjects, Social Sciences and Built Environment and 90% of the University’s departments graded 4 or 5.

Commercial potential is the heart of much of Loughborough’s research and the University has a strong track record of fostering innovation and spin out company formation. To date over 20 spin-outs have been nurtured – more per research pound than any other institution in the UK. The campus also houses an award-winning Innovation Centre, an incubator facility for 40 start-up companies.

The University has long-standing collaborative links with many blue-chip companies, including Ford, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, JCB and Lotus. Sited on the campus are the £10m Henry Ford College for retail and management training of Ford employees throughout Europe, the Rolls-Royce Fuel Cells facility, and the Systems Engineering Innovation Centre (SEIC) – a partnership venture between the University and BAE Systems. A state-of-the-art Sports Technology Institute, the largest facility of its type in the world, is due to open early 2008. Dedicated to working with industry, the Institute will help to improve the chances of athletes winning Gold at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.

Close links with industry allow the University’s students to benefit from profitable work placements, with 65% of Loughborough’s degrees offering a year in industry. Professional institutions and business regard the University’s degree programmes highly, and its graduates are consistently targeted by the UK's top recruiters.

In recognition of its contribution to the sector, Loughborough has been awarded five Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education – an achievement bettered by no other university.

Faculty

Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 0 FTE: 1,143

Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, hospital residents and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.

Number of International Faculty Staff Headcount: 0 FTE: 283

Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained.

Entry Requirements

Avg Entry Requirements Headcount: 3

Please express the average academic achievement entry requirements for your institution. Please convert your domestic requirements to the US Grade Point Average system. The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data. Main claims to international academic or non-academic excellence

Loughborough is internationally renowned in many areas of research and boasts a host of leading academics in their fields. For instance, the Institute of Development Engineering is internationally recognised as an expert in how to provide and manage sustainable infrastructure – clean water, safe sanitation and efficient roads - for the world's poorest people. It provides teaching, research and consultancy in over 65 countries worldwide, particularly through its Water and Engineering Development Centre (WEDC). With many collaborative links with overseas universities for teaching and research, it runs annual conferences, alternately in Africa and Asia, to bring general expertise to the places where it is needed. The Institute is also highly regarded for its applied research in areas such as the provision of emergency relief. In recent years it was selected by relief organisations to assist with major refugee crisis in Bangladesh, with the Kurds after the Gulf War, and in Sudan, Rwanda and Zaire.

Several of the University’s departments have international partnerships, in Singapore, India and Pakistan, to name just a few. Links have also been built through sports activity, and key universities with strong academic and coaching activities that have close affinities to Loughborough are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Massie, Stellanboche and Beijing Sports University.

Such partnerships reinforce Loughborough’s position as the UK’s premier university for sport. It boasts an unparalleled record of
excellence, having dominated the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) championships for very nearly thirty years. Some of the most celebrated names in sport – including world record breaking athletes Sebastian Coe, Paula Radcliffe, David Moorcroft and Steve Backley; probably the greatest-ever Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson; England cricketer Monty Panesar; and World Cup winning England rugby coach Clive Woodward – have studied at Loughborough. Over 250 international level athletes are currently studying and training on campus. The University also has the largest concentration of high quality sports training facilities, equipment and support resources in the world and is home to the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) National Centre.
