Located in Mainz, a city of both tradition and progress, our University is one of the largest in Germany, and it is the research center of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. We attract students and scholars from all over the world, we hold national conferences, and regularly host international symposia on a wide spectrum of academic fields.

Named after the famous fifteenth-century printer who revolutionized printing with movable types, the Johannes Gutenberg University combines stimulating academic diversity with excellent research structures: About 500 professors and 2,300 members of our academic staff research and teach in our eleven departments and 150 institutes. The Johannes Gutenberg University is proud to host 12 Collaborative Research Centers, 9 Research Units, and 6 Research Training Groups, all funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), as well as numerous research initiatives funded by other sources, both public and private. In addition, our campus is home to the Max Planck Institutes for Polymer Research and Chemistry.

With degree programs available in more than ninety subjects and in numerous combinations, the range of courses we offer is extremely wide and covers all areas, be it the humanities, social studies, law, economics, or medicine. Moreover, the integration of the Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Music is unique in the German landscape of higher education. Currently, some 35,000 students, 14 percent of them from abroad, take advantage of these opportunities.

Johannes Gutenberg University is a European and an international university and the academic center of Rhineland-Palatinate. Numerous international educational and research cooperations and the integration of a high percentage of students and scholars from around the world testify to that. Due to the continuing internationalization of academic programs and research, the University of Mainz prepares its students for tasks in an international context. Our commitment to internationalization is based on the Higher Education Act of the Rhineland-Palatinate (§2) and the University’s mission.

Range of Fees

At present, the University of Mainz waives tuition fees for the majority of national and international students. Students are only required to pay a student fee of 190 Euros per semester (applies for the winter semester of 2007/08). The student fee includes the so-called “Semesterticket” (transportation card), which allows students to use public transportation in Mainz and its surroundings at no extra cost.

Accommodation

Student housing accomodates only about 8 per cent of all students enroled at the University of Mainz. Therefore, waiting lists are unavoidable. Students are personally responsible for reserving a room in student housing or finding an apartment in Mainz. Accommodation Range

Student accommodation costs 150 to 300 Euros a month.

Finance and Scholarships

Johannes Gutenberg University has only a limited number of scholarships for international students. In general, no scholarships are awarded to freshmen. International applicants interested in scholarships/grants should consult the database available on the website of the German Academic Exchange Service: http://www.daad.de/deutschland/foerderung/stipendiendatenbank/00462.en.html

Please note that international students who have an “Aufenthaltsbewilligung” (residence permit for the purpose of studies) in their passport, are not allowed to work in Germany unless this is mentioned in their passport. If mentioned, work is automatically permitted for either 90 days of full-time work or 180 days of part-time work.

U.S. citizens who wish to apply for a U.S. student loan, please note that our school code with the U.S. Department of Education is 01059800. Non-English Language Requirements

Studying at Johannes Gutenberg University usually requires sufficient German skills at the time of application. Exceptions to the rule exist for exchange students, applicants to the International Degrees and Graduate Schools, which are taught in a language other than German and sometimes for doctoral studies. Each year, the University of Mainz organizes German language courses for all learners of German – whether they are students or not – during the summer semester break.
