UNIVERSITY PUTRA MALAYSIA
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia was founded in 1971 through the merger of Faculty of Agriculture, University Malaya and Agriculture College in Serdang.
The first three founder faculties were Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Forestry and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. UPM maintains its traditional role of education in focussing its tertiary level research on agriculture and its relevant areas.
In early 80âs, UPM has expanded its scope by including science and technology into its areas of studies. In 1994, UPM aspired to be the University of the Next Millennium and in line with its vision, the name of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia was changed to Universiti Putra Malaysia by Malaysiaâs Prime Minister, Datoâ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed on April 3, 1997. This is looked upon as a strategic move in preparing UPM as a versatile, higher learning institution that is in tandem with Malaysiaâs dynamic technology.
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has established its vision to become a global player with an internationally reputable community of intellectuals who will make the nation proud for their contributions to scholarly writing and discoveries, and continue to give new meaning to the progress, growth and development of the nation and the world. As part of its goal to produce quality graduates who are competitive and resilient through lifelong learning, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) takes upon itself as one of the driversmaking this vision a reality, albeit within the management discipline.
MISSION
"The University's mission is to be a leading Centre of Learning and Research, contributing not only towards human advancement and discovery of knowledge but also to the creation of wealth and nation building."
VISION
The vision of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is to become a world class university, an internationally reputable community of intellectuals who will make the nation proud for their contributions to scholarly writing and discoveries, and continue to give new meaning to the progress, growth and development of the nation and the world.
GOAL
UPM has established eight (8) goals to realize its vision. Each goal has its own specific objectives. The achievement of each objective depends on the execution of the respective action plan. The eight goals are as follows :
1. To produce quality graduates who are competitive and resilient through lifelong learning;
2. To transform UPM into a renowned research university;
3. To upgrade UPM as a renowned center of learning, agricultural and bio-resources services internationally;
4. To enhance a quality management system that is effective, efficient, transparent and client-friendly;
5. To develop and create excellent human resources and professional environment;
6. To promote an Information and Communication Technology (ICT)culture through e-University;
7. To effectively generate and manage University Financial Resources and
8. To establish UPM as the Center of Professional Development Services and Continuing Education.
Faculty
| Number of Faculty Staff | Headcount: 2,648 FTE: 2,513 | Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator. |
| Number of International Faculty Staff | Headcount: 123 FTE: 123 | Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained. |
| Number of Inbound Visiting Faculty Staff | Headcount: 723 FTE: 723 | Number of academic faculty staff contributing to teaching or research at your university in the last 12 months who are visiting from an overseas institution for a minimum period of at least 3 months. |
| Number of Outbound Visiting Faculty Staff | Headcount: 921 FTE: 921 | Number of academic faculty staff employed by your institution contributing to teaching or research at an overseas institution in the last 12 months for a minimum period of at least 3 months. |
| Number of Staff with PhD | Headcount: 1,152 FTE: 1,152 | Number of academic faculty staff employed by your institution that have studied a PhD |

Language students who take part in a course not contributing to a degree qualification should be counted under 'Total International Students'. |

A BRIEF HISTORY
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia was founded in 1971 through the merger of Faculty of Agriculture, University Malaya and Agriculture College in Serdang. The first three founder faculties were Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Forestry and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. UPM maintains its traditional role of education in focussing its tertiary level research on agriculture and its relevant areas.
In the early 80âs, UPM expanded its scope by including science and technology into its areas of studies.
DEVELOPMENT
Currently UPM has two (2) campuses i.e. the Main Campus in Serdang, a Branch Campus in Bintulu (UPMKB) plus a Marineculture and Oceanography School in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. Both campuses are under the UPM Serdang Main Campus administration. At present Universiti Putra Malaysia has 16 faculties, 10 centres and 8 institutes.
The main campus is located in Serdang, Selangor which is about 23 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur city. The campus is one of the major institutions within the Serdang Complex, which consists of agencies such as the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), the Department of Agriculture Research Center, the Food Technical Research Centre, and the Institute of Agriculture. The Serdang Campus is 1,214 hectares in land area, out of which about 121 hectares are taken up by the administrative buildings, lecture halls, hostel blocks, staff housing, playing fields, and other amenities, whilst the remaining areas make up the University Agriculture Park.
The re-opening of the Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus has provided more opportunities for higher education in the country. This noble effort not only opens more doors for Malaysians to explore the various fields of knowledge but it also provides new aspirations in the development of education in Malaysia.
