Bermula dengan pengambilan seramai 57 orang pelajar sains, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) membangun dengan pesatnya. Kini, USM menawarkan pelbagai kursus di peringkat ijazah pertama dan ijazah tinggi kepada lebih 20,000 orang pelajar. Hari ini USM juga telah muncul menjadi antara universiti ternama di dalam mahupun di luar negara.

Kejayaan–kejayaan dalam pelbagai bidang, terutamanya penyelidikan, termasuk yang terbaru melalui Anugerah Inovasi Asia, sebagai satu-satunya pemenang dari negara ini, berjaya meletakkan nama USM di peta dunia.

Penubuhan USM bermula dengan persetujuan yang dicapai terhadap resolusi yang diluluskan di Dewan Undangan Negeri Pulau Pinang pada tahun 1962, yang mencadangkan agar sebuah kolej universiti ditubuhkan di negeri ini. Sebidang tanah telah diperolehi di Sungai Ara, disusuli dengan Perletakan Batu Asas oleh Perdana Menteri Malaysia Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj pada 7 Ogos 1967.

Walau bagaimanapun, melihat kepada keperluan kampus yang lebih luas dan kondusif sesuai dengan keperluan guna tenaga negara pada masa depan, pada tahun 1969, sebuah universiti sepenuhnya ditubuhkan dengan nama Universiti Pulau Pinang.

Pada bulan April 1969, Profesor Hamzah Sendut telah dilantik sebagai Naib Canselor. Dua bulan berikutnya, kumpulan pertama seramai 57 orang pelajar diterima masuk untuk mengikuti pengajian di sini. Disebabkan kampus Sg. Ara tidak dapat dibangunkan secepat mungkin, kumpulan pertama pelajar ini telah ditempatkan di Maktab Perguruan Persekutuan Bukit Gelugor yang dipinjamkan oleh Kementeri Pelajaran. Pada tahun 1971, kampus yang sepatutnya terletak di Sungai Ara telah ditukarkan ke Minden, sebuah kawasan yang cantik seluas 500 ekar, dengan kehijauan dan lokasinya di tanah tinggi dan pemandangan lautan yang mempersonakan.

Sejak permulaannya lagi, USM memilih untuk menggunakan sistem pusat pengajian berbanding sistem tradisi iaitu fakulti. Uniknya sistem pusat pengajian ini ialah, setiap pusat pengajian dapat menyatukan subjek pengajiannya dan kursus-kursus yang dapat memenuhi keperluan pengijazahan yang mengkhusus di dalam sesuatu bidang yang dipilih dan pada masa yang sama turut menguasai bidang-bidang disiplin pengajian yang lain.

Pendekatan antara-disiplin ini dapat memastikan USM menghasilkan para graduan yang diasuh dan dididik untuk menjadi serba boleh. USM merupakan universiti pertama yang mengamalkan sistem pusat pengajian di negara ini.
