The Politecnico di Milano was established in 1863 by a group of scholars and entrepreneurs belonging to prominent Milanese families. Its most eminent professors over the years have included the mathematician Francesco Brioschi (its first Director), Luigi Cremona, and Giulio Natta (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963). The Politecnico di Milano is now ranked as one of the most outstanding European universities in Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design, and in many disciplines is regarded as a leading research institution worldwide
In Italy the term "Politecnico" means a state university consisting only of study programmes in Engineering and Architecture. The Politecnico di Milano is nowadays organised in 16 departments and a network of 9 Schools of Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design spread over 7 campuses over the Lombardy region with a central administration and management. The 9 schools are devoted to education whereas the 16 departments are devoted to research.
The educational policy of the Politecnico di Milano consists in offering different curricula tailored to the needs of its territory, which is considered one of most developed industrial areas in Europe.
The number of students enrolled in all campuses is approximately 30,000, which makes the Politecnico di Milano the largest institution in Italy for Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design.
Faculty
| Number of Faculty Staff | Headcount: 1,431 FTE: 1,431 | Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, hospital residents and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator. |
| Number of International Faculty Staff | Headcount: 62 FTE: 62 | Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained. |
| Number of Inbound Visiting Faculty Staff | Headcount: 19 FTE: 19 | Number of academic faculty staff contributing to teaching or research at your university in the last 12 months who are visiting from an overseas institution for a minimum period of at least 3 months. |
| Number of Outbound Visiting Faculty Staff | Headcount: 8 FTE: 8 | Number of academic faculty staff employed by your institution contributing to teaching or research at an overseas institution in the last 12 months for a minimum period of at least 3 months. |

Entry Requirements
| Avg Entry Requirements | Headcount: 3 | Please express the average academic achievement entry requirements for your institution. Please convert your domestic requirements to the US Grade Point Average system. The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data. Main claims to international academic or non-academic excellence
On top of the full common educational offer in order to attract foreign students, Politecnico is mainly focusing its attention on some of its programs, which include the possibility of a complete education in English. In addition, there is the availability of sponsorships and financial supports for talented students.
Range of Fees
Students pay University tuition fees according to their family income. There are 10 different income classes.
Range: from about 800â⬠up to 3300â⬠per year.
Accommodation
Traditionally, Italian universities are organized differently from most international institutions. This means that Italian campuses consist of academic and administrative buildings as well as departments and laboratories. Students' residences are not part of the campus. All campuses of the Politecnico di Milano are organized according to this model.
However, especially in the latest years, the Politecnico di Milano has been working on the ?accommodation policy? aimed to offer an accommodation to the highest number of students, always trying to involve them in the academic context and in the Milanese environment. Taking this challenge has meant to plan various activities for strengthening and diversifying the accommodation services.
Important steps towards the creation of an accommodation system have been made by reinforcing the University facilities system. In fact the Politecnico di Milano during the last three academic years has almost doubled its offer.
Nonetheless, the Politecnico di Milano cannot guarantee all students a place in residences and in fact some students choose to live in privately rented housing.
To this extent, you can contact WebCasa. It is a service offered by University Lab, a Politecnico students associations. They collect privates announcements for rooms/flats and help students accessing this kind of information.
