The Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA) is the youngest public institution for higher education and scientific research within the Lisbon metropolitan area. Founded in 1973, within a framework of expansion and diversification in Portuguese higher education, NOVA gives pride of place to cooperation between the different areas of knowledge.

The University, which covers an area of approximately 60 hectares, is located on three campuses – Campolide, Caparica and Avenida de Berna – and in different sites in Lisbon.

At present NOVA consists of five Faculties, three Institutes and one School, which between them offer a wide variety of courses in all areas of knowledge. It awards first-cycle degrees in around 40 subject areas and offers 65 second-cycle degree programs, 64 third-cycle degree programs. It also has 49 academic research centers funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) and several cooperative and international projects, such as the SOCRATES/ERASMUS program. Professors, researchers and students come from a variety of countries and cultures, and help to create a cosmopolitan university environment open to the future.

Via its three main strategic pillars – Internationalization, Dimension and Quality, the University Nova de Lisboa seeks to:

• Contribute to the advancement of academic knowledge in order to meet and resolve the

challenges presented by the 21st century.

• Contribute to Portugal’s progress.

• Play a role in world development.

• Innovatively implement the Bologna Process.

• Become a pro-active member of the Portuguese- speaking world.

Keeping its mission in mind, one of NOVA’s strategic objectives is to participate in the globalization process. It also intends to promote the internationalization of its academic staff (1,420 members) and students (14, 000).

The Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with its nine Academic Units, currently constitutes an incontestable cultural, artistic, academic and technological resource. It reaches into almost every part of human kind’s academic research and teaching heritage, which are recognised as areas universities are fully endowed to serve. It has a strong tradition of work in areas of innovation, with corresponding outcomes in the economy, services, and in extra curricular training. It has established important protocols with its peers both nationally and internationally as well as with practically all meaningful institutions contributing to our daily reality as a nation, namely those belong to our cultural heritage, taking part in economic activity, health care or contributing to local government.

This is a construction that, although it aims at being timeless, has, nonetheless, been the result of groups of people in many different areas of knowledge dedicating to achieving high levels of quality while pursuing in the search for knowledge so as to provide answers to society’s needs in the course of its evolutionary trajectory.

In this journey through time and space, which involves us all, the Universidade Nova de Lisboa is conscious of its obligations and the responsibility it has taken on board to the society which it aims at serving.

Faculty

Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 1,792 FTE: 1,444

Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.

Entry Requirements

Avg Entry Requirements Headcount: 3

Please express the average academic achievement entry requirements for your institution. Please convert your domestic requirements to the US Grade Point Average system. The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data.
