A young university with high aspirations
Aarhus University belongs to the international elite. In two prestigious ranking lists of the worlds best universities, Aarhus University is placed in the top 100. As no. 63 in the THE QS rankings,  where Aarhus University is the third-youngest European university in the top 100, and as no. 97 in the Shanghai list.

Aarhus University wishes to combine research in new ways, with new subject areas and across traditional subject borders, in greater depth and in new and unknown fields. Aarhus University offers all types of research from basic, applied and strategic research to research-based advice to the authorities and knowledge transfer.

The main campus is located in Aarhus and, over the years, close and productive collaboration has been developed between the city and its educational institutions, a collaboration that is supported by the entire region. The Municipality of Aarhus ranks as one of Europes best cities in which to study, and emphasises the importance of its educational institutions for the city, especially the university. 80th anniversary
In 2008, Aarhus University celebrated its 80th anniversary. In 1928, 64 students started in rented premises in the centre of Aarhus, and the universitys budget for the first year was 4.500 Euros. In 2009, Aarhus University offers a good and inspiring education and research environment for 35,000 students and 8,500 members of staff, who produce academic results of a high international standard. The budgeted turnover for 2009 amounts to 700 million Euros. The university has activities distributed over 20 locations throughout Denmark.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1997
The most significant event in the research world at Aarhus University took place on 15 October 1997. That was the day it was announced that Professor Emeritus Jens Christian Skou, DrMedSc, from the Faculty of Health Sciences, had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for being the first person ever to describe an ion pump.
An ion pump is an enzyme that transport ions across a cell membrane. In 1957, Skou described the sodium potassium pump. This pump is an absolutely fundamental part of every living cell because it regulates the concentration of salts inside and outside the cell by pumping sodium ions out of the cell.

Aarhus University Strategy 2008 2012
Aarhus University has adopted an ambitious strategy for the period 2008 to 2012. According to the tradition of European universities, research and education are the cornerstones of a university. Aarhus University therefore has great ambitions to provide research, research-based advice to the authorities and education of a high international standard that is constantly being developed. As a prioritised activity, the university assumes responsibility for developing talented young researchers. As a distinguishing feature, the university wishes to support the development of talent all the way from the Masters degree level to PhD studies, and to include a first postdoctoral appointment. SIX FACULTIES, TWO UNIVERSITY SCHOOLS AND NERI
Combined, the nine faculties, schools and national institutes cover the entire research spectrum � basic research, applied research, strategic research and research-based advice to the authorities. In all degree programmes, research and teaching are closely connected, and the research-based instruction � including teaching that spans the main academic areas � ensures the depth of the degree programmes. With its great emphasis on research, it is no surprise that one of the key areas for the University of Aarhus is the development of research talent for the benefit of all sectors of society. The university also willingly assumes its share of responsibility for meeting society's growing need for new flexible degree programmes and continuing and further education for those requiring additional qualifications later in life.

Health Sciences 
Research at the Faculty of Health Sciences belongs to the absolute elite and the faculty ranks among the five best in the Nordic countries.
  Training to be a doctor � and research involving patients � takes place in close interaction with the Aarhus University Hospital, where the faculty�s clinical professors and associate professors are employed. The training programme for dentists has its own clinics and is attached to the School for Dental Assistants, Hygienists and Clinical Technicians.

Humanities 
Culture, languages, IT, the media, philosophy, aesthetics, history and archaeology: there is a wide range of educational options and research at the seven departments and the Graduate School at the Faculty of Humanities. Some of the most recent degree programmes are European studies, experience economy and digital design.
 Researchers communicate their findings via books and journals, museums and lectures, including those held by the Danish University Extension, and the faculty offers customised courses for private companies. The students have good opportunities for periods of practical training in public or private sector companies, and the faculty has more than 200 exchange agreements with universities all over the world.

Social Sciences 
The social science degree programmes cover the subjects economics, business administration, law, political science and psychology. The Institute of Business and Technology in Herning also offers degree programmes in business administration, languages and business communication, as well as engineering science.
  Researchers at the Faculty of Social Sciences contribute actively to the public debate by taking part in high-profile councils, boards and committees, and the research in many areas is distinctive for its very high international standard. The faculty makes targeted efforts to attract even greater numbers of highly qualified Danish and foreign students to the Graduate School of Social Sciences.

Theology 
The Faculty of Theology offers degree programmes in theology, the study of religion and Arabic. The Church of Denmark, upper secondary schools, humanitarian organisations, public institutions and private companies are typical workplaces for the faculty�s graduates.
  Research into theology and the study of religion currently focuses on subjects such as religion and normativity, Christianity in Antiquity, religion and cognition, Islam, and religion, politics and law. Arabic is currently built up with a focus on modern language and social conditions in the Middle East.

Science 
The degree programmes at the Faculty of Science cover the entire area of natural and technical science, from the smallest (nanotechnology) to the largest (astronomy); from the theoretical (mathematics) to the practical (physical education and sport); and from the natural (biology and geology) to the man-made (medical chemistry). The faculty also offers graduate engineer degrees in several fields.
 In most areas, the research is of the highest international standing. The research is carried out in an international environment � often financed by grants from private foundations, state research programmes or the EU, and frequently in collaboration with private companies.

Agricultural Sciences 
The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences is a result of the merger between the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Aarhus University. The faculty�s new degree programmes in agricultural sciences commence in 2008, but the organisation has already been contributing for many years to the education of researchers.
 The faculty�s focus areas are primary agricultural production, the effect of the food chain on the surrounding environment and the basic quality of foodstuffs and their properties in food processing technology. It has extremely modern laboratories and research facilities at its disposal, including experimental stables, greenhouses and semi-field installations.

The Aarhus School of Business (ASB)
The Aarhus School of Business (ASB) is one of the largest business schools in Europe and is today a university school at Aarhus University. ASB is internationally renowned and accredited for its high-quality degree programmes and research, and its close contact with the business community, which is the school�s special focus area. ASB offers internationally oriented degree programmes in economics and business administration, commercial languages, business communication, commercial law, IT and European studies. The school has 190 exchange agreements with universities all over the world and more than 1,000 foreign students. ASB also offers a wide range of further and continuing education programmes, including executive MBA level.
  Research at the Aarhus School of Business is of a high international standing, and researchers at the school are represented on a considerable number of important committees and boards, and work closely with the business community.

The Danish School of Education
The Danish School of Education offers more than twenty advanced studies programmes in the field of education.
  Research at the school covers the entire area of education and includes subjects such as didactics, competence development in adult and continuing education, pedagogy in relation to target groups with special needs, the educational consequences of the use of the media and IT, international comparative education conditions, research into the education of teachers and social educators, and general educational theory development.

The National Environmental Research Institute (NERI)
Water, soil, air, animals and plants. The National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) explores the environment and nature, such as the spread of air pollution, the effects of nanotechnology, how to avert agricultural impact on the water environment, and how green taxes affect the environment and society. Researchers use this knowledge as a basis for providing advice to the authorities and the public administration.
  NERI collaborates with the faculties at the university regarding degree programmes that are relevant to the environmental sector, e.g. environmental economics, the environment and agriculture, and the environment and health.
